What you'll do
* Handle and prepare blood and other specimens from patients to enable the requested laboratory tests to be performed.
* Perform general laboratory duties including the receipt of specimens, Esky packing, Data Entry (registration of pathology requests) into the laboratory information system.
* Under supervision load specimens onto laboratory analysers.
* Maintain competencies in all aspects of CSR and Phlebotomy whilst maintain a low error rate.
* Maintain a safe working environment by ensuring the cleaning of work benches, trolleys, and equipment, meet Queensland Health WHS and Infection Control procedures and policies.
* Participate in quality and service improvement activities to continually improve patient care.
* Comply with procedural standards for operational staff in compliance with NATA 15089 and ISO 9001:2000.
* Participate in the evening, weekend and public holiday roster for hours between 7am-10pm.
* Liaise with patients as well as medical and non-medical staff in a professional manner to ensure the correct processing of specimens and efficient operation of the specimen reception department.
About you
We are searching for someone who has:
* Knowledge or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations, pathology test names and specimen types.
* Availability to work all shifts on the existing and future roster patterns, ability to undertake additional shifts to backfill holiday and sick leave.
* A working knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to quickly learn, all aspects of pre analytical specimen processing (CSR). Data entry skills and the use of MS Word and Excel a distinct advantage.
* Ability to work in a responsible and efficient manner with and without supervision, ability to prioritise workload to meet deadlines, ability to effectively use, or quickly acquire ability to use, the Laboratory Information System.
* An established history of positive teamwork and respectful behaviour. High level of interpersonal and communication skills to enable effective, cooperative interaction within a work group and between clients.
* Certificate III in Pathology Assistance and / or Certificate III in Pathology Specimen Collection (Phlebotomy) would be highly regarded.
* Previous experience in CSR and phlebotomy would be well regarded although not mandatory.
