About the roleOrica's Yarwun facility, located approx.
9 km west of Gladstone in Queensland, is one of the company's largest and most integrated chemical manufacturing sites.
The site operates multiple continuous plants, including three nitric acid plants, two ammonium nitrate plants, an ammonium nitrate emulsion (ANE) plant, and a major sodium cyanide plant, as well as raw-material import and storage facilities at Fisherman's Landing.
Yarwun plays a critical role in Orica's global supply chain, providing essential products to the mining, quarrying, infrastructure, agriculture, and industrial sectors, backed by 24/7 operations and ongoing investments in decarbonisation and emissions abatement technology.As our Senior Environmental Specialist, you will play a critical role in ensuring our Yarwun Facility meets and exceeds environmental, regulatory, and community expectations, driving improvement activities and safeguarding our licence to operate.This role leads environmental compliance and improvement activities, ensuring high standards of environmental performance across operations.
You'll partner closely with the Yarwun Site Leadership and SHES Teams, regional environmental specialists, and key community and regulatory stakeholders to deliver strong compliance outcomes and champion environmental stewardship.What you will be doingLeading Yarwun's environmental compliance by managing regulatory obligations, monitoring legislative changes, and ensuring all SHES and environmental management system requirements are met.Identifying environmental risks, investigating incidents and community concerns, and implementing corrective and preventive actions to drive continuous improvement.Developing, reporting and analysing environmental objectives, targets and monitoring data, ensuring alignment with EA requirements and internal performance systems.Driving environmental improvement by identifying opportunities, developing action plans, and achieving measurable outcomes across site operations.Building strong stakeholder relationships by liaising with regulators, supporting community engagement (including GILG meetings and SHES reporting), and providing expert environmental advice to site personnel.What you will bringDegree qualifications in Environmental Science or Chemical/Environmental Engineering (or similar),5+ years' experience in manufacturing or heavy industry; Major Hazard Facility exposure would be highly regarded.Solid planning, organisation and control capability supported by technical expertise in environmental management, planning and contaminated sites.Demonstrated understanding of environmental regulation, compliance systems and industry planning processes.Sound computer literacy, knowledge of SAP would be highly regarded.Strong collaboration, communication, interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to build trust across all levels.High integrity, sound judgement, resilience, adaptability and an achievement-oriented leadership style.What we offerAs part of a truly global company, you will have the ability to grow and learn in a diverse, collaborative culture.
