Job description
* Paralegal role for a sole practitioner based in Newtown, Sydney.
* Casual position starting 2 days per week, with hybrid working from home arrangements available.
* Above award pay and superannuation.
The firm
Chris Gall is a sole practitioner specialising in plaintiff workers compensation and personal injury law, with a focus on psychological claims. This is a progressive, compassionate practice that puts service to clients first.
The practice has grown steadily and now needs more hands, eyes and minds. The work is a unique challenge as workers compensation is legally technical while psychologically injured clients require compassionate people skills.
The workers compensation practice is supplemented by some general personal injury work such as motor accidents, medical negligence, and public liability claims.
The eclectic Newtown office is shared with a lovely small employment law firm who enjoy an informal, collegiate and socially progressive environment.
The Job
The position is casual, 2 days per week (flexible days), based in the Newtown office initially but hybrid work will become available when suitable. Additional days of work are likely to be available as the practice grows, and permanent part-time conversion is an option after six months.
This is primarily a paralegal role which may involve a mix of legal and administrative work including:
* Legal document drafting (pleadings, application forms, claims etc)
* Document review and electronic filing
* Email correspondence with clients
* Calling and answering calls from clients, organisations
* Client interviews and statement drafting
* Learning, learning, and learning the practice area
* Running matters with supervision (once trained)
* Attendance at court or tribunals on occasion (supervised)

This role would suit a keen, curious mind eager to learn the theory and practice of personal injury law. A burning desire to move money from insurers to people who desperately need it would be a plus, as would the patience and empathy to deal with anxious, distressed and upset people without judgement.
The following criteria are essential:
* Completion of at least 1-2 years of law school OR significant experience as a paralegal

* Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Pro, Word, Outlook, Teams, dictation software and legal case management software
* Strong academic results in Torts, Civil Litigation, or similar, and/or experience quickly learning new areas of legal practice
* Comfortable with foul language and a bit of noise and music in the office
* Connections with community legal centres, unions, human rights / environment groups, or other socially-conscious activity
