Primary objective
Gillen Primary School is situated on 18 acres in the township of Alice Springs. The school was established in 1970. As a member of
the school administration team and under the direction of the Principal/ Business Manager, the Maintenance Officer is required to
play a key role in ensuring the high standard of grounds maintenance, security, safety and presentation associated with the day-
to-day physical condition of the school and assets. The Maintenance Officer is also required to maintain school vehicles, to provide
a safe and secure learning environment at Gillen Primary School. They will be required to manage the significant amount of
equipment and tools owned by the school for the purpose of carrying out this role.
Context statement
Gillen Primary School has an enrolment of 250 students in preschool and the primary years, many of whom are from different
cultural backgrounds. Around 70% of our students are Aboriginal from diverse language groups and backgrounds. Many students
are mobile between town and remote communities and communicate in several different local languages.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Regularly inspect and undertake general repairs and maintenance to school buildings and grounds that require general technical
skills as required. Oversee the satisfactory completion of repairs referred to outside contractors.
2. Carry out a range of tasks to make sure the school premises are in a neat and orderly condition adhering to WHS conditions:
Maintain toilets and wet areas in a clean and hygienic state during school hours, inspect and unlock the school premises each
morning before start time. Report immediately any unusual activity e.g. vandalism, break in etc.
3. Carry out minor purchasing and collection of stores as required. Receive, unpack and distribute stores as directed and assist
with moving furniture and fittings as required, assist on school excursions, camps, sports days and other special events as
required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Building and repairs and maintenance experience with an ability to produce a high standard of finish and demonstrated
experience in gardens/grounds maintenance.
2. Prioritise and perform work tasks reliably, under limited supervision, whilst adhering to school and DoE policies
3. Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality with ability to determine priorities, meet deadlines and work
independently; have well-developed communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with the public, contractors, school
staff and students and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
4. Current Northern Territory driver’s licence and Ochre Card.
Desirable
1. A relevant trade certificate is highly desirable or recognised equivalent trade experience or technical knowledge of practices,
procedures and skill obtained through considerable training or experience.
2. Current LR Drivers Licence
3. Current Test and Tag qualification.
