APS6/EL1 Senior Officer and Assistant Director (multiple positions)
The Digital and Data Division within the Office of the National Intelligence (ONI) is dynamic and growing. Data is at the core of our work; and we are dedicated to innovation and transformation.
We are seeking to fill multiple roles within the Data Branch, working under the leadership of the Chief Data Officer. These roles sit within the Data Strategy team, which drives innovation by leveraging data and technology to gain advantage through analysis and collaborative, interoperable community environments. The team collaborates with the NIC to provide coordinated advice on data and AI-related Australian Government policies and frameworks, focusing on the safe, ethical, and responsible use of AI. The team operates in a dynamic environment, engaging with stakeholders across the NIC, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Department of Finance, Digital Transformation Agency, and Department of Industry, Science and Resources, within the national security and intelligence context.
The roles
The Office of National Intelligence (ONI) is seeking skilled and experienced professionals to contribute to ensuring strategic engagement and alignment across the NIC's AI and data strategic, policy, and governance environments. Working in ONI's Data Strategy team offers a great opportunity to contribute to the NIC's future capability, strengthen strategic thinking, and build new professional networks within the NIC. These positions will provide insight into how the NIC works together to support Australia's national security objectives and achieve shared outcomes.
Our EL1 positions (Assistant Director) require an understanding of policy and governance progression, along with experience or interest in data and AI management. Candidates should have the ability to work under broad direction to initiate and execute work plans to deliver objectives. These roles involve facilitating collaboration between multiple technical and non-technical stakeholders and leading engagement across stakeholders. Some responsibility in leading and managing a small team is expected.
Our APS6 positions (Senior Officer) require an understanding of policy and governance development, with exposure to data and AI management or a curiosity to develop this knowledge to help drive impactful outcomes. These roles influence and contribute to project success and team objectives, supporting senior officers in analysis and recommendations. They require the ability to work autonomously, apply judgment, and respond effectively to issues and tasks related to each deliverable.
Key attributes
To succeed in this role, you will need to demonstrate:
* Experience in developing, drafting, and progressing policies and frameworks;
* An understanding or interest in AI and/or data governance and management requirements;
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with keen attention to detail, and excellent written and verbal communication skills;
* Experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders;
* Ability to establish priorities, monitor progress, and deliver outcomes within set timeframes; and
* EL1 – demonstrated leadership and management experience;
* Relevant tertiary qualification;
* Relevant industry qualifications.
