**About the opportunity**
The **Technical Officer**will work in the Darlington campus in the Engineering Building (J03) to deliver timely and effective technical services within the research groups to achieve enhanced education/research support outcomes. This includes provision of hands-on support, primarily for practical classes as required, maintenance of equipment and safe working environment, provision of technical advice to users (academic staff/teaching staff/researchers), protocol optimisation (where required), sourcing and preparation of consumables, and assist in the writing of safety and procedural documentation.
The **Technical Officer**will implement processes, procedures and systems in place to provide the agreed upon customer services efficiently and as directed for a range of stakeholders. The **Technical Officer**will provide training to facility users in the safe operation of TSS managed equipment, building inductions, and general laboratory procedures.
The role also supports the Senior Technical Officer in ensuring that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards and other compliance requirements of the work area are met and are aligned with the University's WHS policy and relevant legislation.
**Your key responsibilities will be to**:
- support the agreed delivery of technical services in the designated area, and facilitate biomedical engineering undergraduate classes within the laboratories
- deliver training to facility users in the safe operation of equipment, building inductions, and general laboratory procedures
- support the implementation of service improvements and service excellence within the responsibility area
- contribute to a positive, professional and customer-focused team culture
- support the effective utilisation of resources within the designated area of responsibility, ensuring that the education/research requirements are effectively met
- champion best practices, workplace health and safety, compliance, and risk management
- seek and act on opportunities to cross-skill, including drawing on the knowledge and expertise of others
- collaborate with other TSS teams across the university and support the operations of projects managed centrally as required.

- a degree in biomedical engineering (or equivalent) with relevant work experience providing support to biomedical engineering research or educational laboratories
- experience in process control including use of modern data acquisition and analysis tools and sensors as well as experience with biomedical engineering and WHS practice would be highly desirable
- experience in providing customer facing laboratory support, training, and maintenance on common wet laboratory or biomedical engineering equipment would be highly desirable
- fitness ability to do manual lifting as required in the labs
- relevant experience in safely working in and managing in laboratory environments, particularly related to biomedical Engineering research and/or teaching
- relevant experience in the safe handling/storage/disposal of biological and hazardous substances (e.g., chemicals, waste, compressed gases and cryogens)
- ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that arise as part of normal daily work
- the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with customers and stakeholders
- customer service experience: experience in any front-line service environment interacting with customers or clients.
