About The Team & The Position
The System Design Division plays a critical role in AEMO's success, driving the organisation's collaborative and industry-wide efforts in meeting the challenges of a transitioning energy system. The Division includes specialist areas in system planning, forecasting, future energy systems as well as onboarding and connections.
The Market Operability team is seeking a Principal Analyst to undertake advanced energy modelling and analysis for the east coast gas and electricity systems. The team is responsible for the delivery of Gas Statement of Opportunities (GSOO), operability forecasting for the Integrated System Plan (ISP) for the National Electricity Market (NEM) and integrated gas and electricity modelling for the ISP.
As a Principal Analyst, you will be responsible for providing strategic direction to key reports, overseeing modelling and analysis, and communicating results to various internal and external stakeholders. You will use a mix of forecast methods for the gas and electricity markets and modelling techniques focused on system optimisation over the short, medium and long-term. The Principal Analyst will lead model developments and improvements affecting short-term modelling to better analyse the reliability of the future energy system and support the development of the ISP.
Position Responsibilities
* Provide expert technical advice, expertise, and leadership on market modelling matters, including coordination of the GSOO process, leading short-term market modelling components of the ISP.
* Apply advanced modelling methods, economic theory, and/or technical engineering knowledge to finalise model inputs and assumptions, run models, analyse results, and present analysis in written reports and verbal presentations.
* Support the Manager in stakeholder coordination functions and facilitate industry forums to ensure that AEMO's planning activities are effectively coordinated and communicated with stakeholders.
* Support the Manager in people‐management related processes, such as recruitment and development of staff, training, and regular feedback and performance appraisals.
Position Requirements Skills & Experience
* Proven experience in energy market simulation software (preferably PLEXOS) and forecasting tools and processes.
* Demonstrated experience in energy market analysis (electricity and/or gas) and the interpretation of analysis performed by others.
* Demonstrable experience in managing projects and people to achieve timely delivery of specified outcomes.
* Knowledge and experience in analysing the physical operation of the electricity and/or gas systems and the overarching markets.
* Understanding of power system reliability assessments.
* Experience in writing technical reports and other documents that convey, in simple terms, complex ideas and analysis.
* Very strong communication skills, particularly the ability to present modelling and analysis, and make recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
Education / Professional Certifications
* Tertiary and/or post graduate qualifications in mathematics, economics, data science, physics or engineering or an appropriate technology discipline.
