Role Description
We are looking for a technically hands-on Senior Linux Engineer (Advanced Practitioner) for an initial 12 month contract to be based onsite in Canberra (ACT). You will be responsible for the following;
• Administer and maintain Linux-based servers, infrastructure and software across both physical and virtual environments.
• Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and optimal performance of critical systems.
• Design, build and implement security and network management in support of the Land Combat System Validation Lab and initiatives as directed by LNIC.
• Close collaboration with engineering, DevSecOps and Environment teams to securely deploy and maintain experimental systems; contribute towards future architectural decisions.
• Provide technical support to Army exercises for role specific technologies and systems.
• Conduct regular system audits, perform vulnerability assessments, and manage patching activities.
• Manage SELinux policies, configuring firewalls (iptables/nftables), and enforce secure access controls, including compliance to the Information Security manual (ISM).
• Support accreditation processes and maintain comprehensive compliance documentation.
• Deploy, maintain and manage large Linux Environment Management tools such as Satellite and Ansible for large scale Linux fleet management.
• Developing and maintaining automation scripts using Bash, Python, and Ansible to streamline operations.
• Dev sec Ops – CICD pipelines, GitLab, Ansible.
• Open Stack / Open Shift, Docker, PODMAN, Kubernetes – containerisation.
• Standardising system deployments and enforce configuration baselines.
• Maintain version-controlled infrastructure-as-code repositories ensuring traceability and supports continuous improvement in system management practices.
REQUIRED SKILLS
• Extensive experience with Linux system administration in secure, mission-critical environments, primarily with Red Hat based operating systems.
• Strong knowledge of networking, storage, and virtualisation (KVM, VMware).
• Proven ability to implement security controls and respond to cyber threats.
• Familiarity with integrating emerging technologies into secure infrastructure.
DESIRABLE SKILLS
• Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) - Security+, CISSP, or equivalent security certification.
• Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) Foundation (for service management).
• AWS/Azure/GCP certifications (for hybrid cloud environments)
• Experience with monitoring and visualisation suites – Grafana, Prometheus, and Elastic stack.
