Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research, and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, offering ambulatory, inpatient, and home and community-based services.
The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is a state-of-the-art 65-bed unit treating over 3000 patients annually. It provides Victorian state services for heart and lung transplantation (including paediatric lung transplantation), mechanical cardiac devices, ECMO, burns, and hyperbaric medicine. The Alfred is one of two centres offering state services for adult trauma, HIV, and bone marrow transplantation. Most surgical and medical subspecialties are represented, reflecting the centre's status as a quaternary referral hospital.
The department is accredited for 2 core years of training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine. It offers an extensive, consultant-led education program, including weekly teaching sessions, journal clubs, in-situ simulation, bronchoscopy training, ECMO, and artificial heart certification programs. Senior registrars receive leadership and mentoring training, with certification available upon completion. Advanced trainees preparing for the CICM exam receive additional training.
