The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Senior Projects Officer, Litigation and Coronial Matters, to provide a critical role within Statewide Operational Support, System Performance Branch in the Custodial Operations Division of Corrections Victoria.

About the Business Unit

Corrections Victoria is part of the Corrections and Justice Services group in the department. Corrections Victoria operates Victoria's adult custodial corrections system. Its vision is for Safer Prisons, Safer People, Safer Communities. Corrections Victoria's mission is to create a safer, smarter system with a skilled and supported workforce, that enables people in our care to make better decisions.

The System Performance Branch in Custodial Operations comprises three teams, which are: Operational Assurance, Compliance and Reviews; Continuous Improvement; and Statewide Operational Support. The branch provides authoritative, strategic, operational and policy advice, and briefing papers on a range of correctional issues to senior correctional management and is responsible for a range of work primarily across prisons. Its responsibilities include state-wide oversight of A Safer Places to Work, a range of central functions, including operational policy development, review and amendment, convening and participating in state-wide managers' meetings, performance monitoring and reporting, incident reporting, responding to family violence information sharing requests, oversight of internal and external reviews and investigations, coordination of Corrections Victoria's responses to coronial matters and litigation, auditing, correspondence, prison outreach and implementation support and general advice to prisons and other departmental staff and internal and external stakeholders.

About the Role

The Senior Projects Officer reports to the Manager, Litigation & Coronial Matters and is responsible for providing support to the Deaths in Prisons portfolio and the coordination of CV's responses to prison-related Coronial and litigation matters. This work requires accurate and timely responses to various requests for information and advice, in a time pressured environment. As a central CV contact for liaison with staff from the Coroners Court of Victoria, internal and external legal units/businesses, prisons, Community Operations and Parole and departmental units including Justice Health and the Justice Assurance and Review Office, the Senior Projects Officer will have an exceptional understanding of the prison operating environment, its policies and CV's information databases; and will demonstrate flexibility, attention to detail, and excellent organisational and communication skills. The Senior Projects Officer will also represent the Manager, Litigation & Coronial Matters and at times other senior staff from Custodial Operations, at relevant forums and meetings as required.

While the position is based at 121 Exhibition Street Melbourne, flexible work arrangements are available, and you will be required to travel to other locations based on business needs.

Some of your duties will include:

* Support the coordination and management of CV's responses to prison-related deaths, coronial and litigation matters. This involves tracking all coronial and litigation matters, providing authoritative advice to various internal and external stakeholders, searching and gathering relevant material and briefing the Deputy Commissioner, Custodial Operations, Commissioner and other senior department staff.
* Respond to recommendations resulting from internal reviews, coronial and litigation matters. This includes policy review, amendment and development, and practice changes.
* Prepare complex briefings and correspondence for the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, Custodial Operations and Secretarial and Ministerial Briefings.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

* Knowledge and understanding of Corrections Victoria's prison operations, policies and practices.
* Demonstrated ability to engage internal and external stakeholders effectively.
* Proficient in the use of CV's systems including PIMS, E*Justice and Centurion and experience in TRIM and EBC is highly desirable.

Qualifications

* Relevant tertiary qualification or experience is desirable.
