About the role
As a Technical Assistant, you will play an important role in supporting the delivery of high‐quality, hands‐on training within the Furnishing and Cabinet Making section at the TAFE NSW Tighes Hill Campus in Newcastle. This is a part‐time opportunity (0.4 FTE), with flexibility for the successful candidate to work either two full days or spread hours across more days, depending on operational needs. You will contribute to the smooth and safe running of trade workshops by providing practical, behind‐the‐scenes support to teachers and students.
In this role, you will prepare materials, tools and machinery to ensure practical sessions run efficiently and safely, assist during classes and demonstrations, and help maintain teaching aids and workshop environments. You will also be responsible for the care, maintenance and stock control of equipment and consumables, ensuring compliance with Work Health and Safety requirements. Your attention to detail and trade knowledge will help create a safe and effective learning environment where students can develop job‐ready skills.
About you
You hold a relevant trade qualification and/or demonstrated industry experience, ideally in furnishing, cabinet making or wood machining, with strong hands‐on capability in a workshop environment. You bring a solid mechanical understanding and practical experience using tools and machinery, enabling you to confidently support teaching staff and students during training activities.
Highly practical and organised, you thrive in a hands‐on role, taking pride in maintaining a safe, clean and efficient workspace. You have a sound understanding of equipment maintenance and Work Health and Safety requirements, and you apply this knowledge to ensure tools and machinery are well maintained and safe for use. This role suits someone reliable and team‐oriented who enjoys supporting high‐quality vocational training behind the scenes.
To be considered, you must meet the essential requirements outlined in the role description. A current First Aid Certificate is highly desirable, while an Electrical Tag and Test Certificate is not a requirement for this role.
