Perfect Square Design is a Sydney-based design practice specialising in commercial and industrial projects. The studio works closely with business owners, developers and operators to design practical, compliant and efficient built environments across sectors including warehouses, gyms, childcare centres and commercial facilities.
As the business continues to grow, we are seeking a Design Director to join the leadership team and take responsibility for overseeing project delivery, mentoring the design team and ensuring projects move efficiently through council and compliance pathways.
This role will operate as second-in-command to the Managing Director and will play a key role in shaping the future growth of the practice.
The Role
The Design Director will lead the design team and act as the primary technical authority within the business. The role ensures projects progress smoothly through planning pathways, that design output maintains a high standard and that clients receive professional guidance throughout the lifecycle of their projects.
The successful candidate will oversee project delivery across the studio while mentoring designers and supporting the continued growth of the practice.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and mentor the internal design team
* Review drawings and technical outputs before submission
* Provide guidance to designers on planning pathways and compliance requirements
* Collaborate with the Project Manager to ensure projects remain on schedule
* Contribute to improving internal processes and project delivery frameworks
* Work closely with the Managing Director to support studio operations and delivery standards
Project Oversight
* Oversee the progression of projects across key stages including Concept, DA, CDC, CC and construction documentation
* Ensure projects move efficiently through council and certification processes
* Act as escalation point for technical or planning challenges
Technical Expertise
* Provide expert guidance on council pathways including DA, CDC and other planning approvals
* Ensure design output aligns with planning regulations and compliance frameworks
* Support the team in navigating council requirements and consultant coordination
Client Engagement
* Lead client meetings when required
* Provide strategic guidance to clients during the design and approval process
* Maintain strong professional relationships with clients, consultants and certifiers
Experience & Skills
We are seeking an experienced design professional who combines strong technical knowledge with leadership capability.
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
* 5+ years experience in architecture or design
* Experience leading or mentoring design teams
* Strong knowledge of NSW planning pathways including DA, CDC and CC
* Experience working with councils, certifiers and consultants
* Excellent communication skills and ability to guide clients through complex planning processes
* Strong organisational and leadership capability
Preferred but not essential:
* Registered Architect (NSW)
