About the VGSO

The Victorian Government Solicitor's Office (VGSO) serves the rule of law exclusively for the State.

The VGSO provides responsive legal services exclusively for the Victorian Government and public sector. Our place within government ensures we are at the centre of legal change, reform and problem-solving. We operate as a service-driven legal professional practice and strive for excellence in this competitive environment. In all aspects of our operations, we aim to role model and live by our values: Responsiveness, Integrity, Insight, Collaboration and Excellence.

About the branch

The Litigation and Dispute Resolution (L&DR) Branch is a team of approximately 60 legal practitioners and an additional team of 35 (approx.) legal support staff (including paralegals) that provide specialist legal services to a large number of government clients and departments.

The Branch enjoys an extraordinary diversity of exciting and challenging litigation and advisory work, working on matters that are topical and often involve public interest issues. Matters cover areas such as personal injury claims (including those involving institutional abuse), police civil claims, coronial inquests, vexatious litigant applications, tortious claims, defamation, post-sentence supervision and detention orders, judicial review (including those involving prisoners) and matters involving the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act.

About the role

Step into a dynamic leadership opportunity as the inaugural Paralegal Team Leader, where you will shape the future of the legal support capability within the Branch. Reporting to a Lead Counsel, you will lead a dedicated team of paralegals, driving excellence in service delivery and fostering a collaborative and consultative high performing culture.

This is more than a run-of-the-mill supervisory role, it is a chance to make a lasting impact. You will oversee workload allocation, ensure consistency and quality in outputs, and act as a key liaison between the paralegal team and the broader Branch. Your leadership will be instrumental in embedding continuous improvement, championing professional development, and implementing best practice processes for the Branch's paralegal cohort.

As a member of the Branch leadership team, you will work closely with solicitors and legal assistants to streamline workflows and enhance stakeholder engagement and communication. You will also contribute to strategic initiatives, support knowledge sharing, and help to shape internal systems and precedents that elevate the Branch's legal capabilities and client service delivery.

Skills and Experience

We are looking for a confident and capable leader who brings a blend of legal expertise and people leadership. To thrive in this role, you will have:

* Proven leadership experience in managing high performing legal support teams, including mentoring, coaching, and performance development.
* Deep legal support knowledge, with advanced skills in legal document management, strong technical capability, and meticulous attention to detail.
* Hands on experience with eDiscovery tools (Ringtail or Nuix Discover highly regarded), along with a solid understanding of court processes, legal research, and drafting.
* Exceptional organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines in a fast paced, high volume environment.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, enabling you to build trusted relationships across all levels of the organisation.
* A proactive, solutions-focused mindset, with a passion for driving continuous improvement and streamlining legal support processes.
* High levels of discretion and professionalism, especially when handling sensitive or confidential information.

Benefits

VGSO offers an inclusive, collegiate and collaborative work environment where you will be well-supported and mentored to develop your knowledge. You will also be given excellent career opportunities to progress and develop within the organisation.

VGSO embraces flexibility and recognises the importance of work-life balance. We offer a flexible hybrid work arrangement, allowing employees to spend half of their time working remotely and the other half in the office. This setup encourages collaboration and strengthens team connections, while supporting your ability to achieve a healthy work-life balance.
