Job Description:
The Macro Space Planner is responsible for the strategic planning and optimisation of physical store space across the entire retail network. This role ensures that store layouts and department adjacencies are customer-centric, commercially effective, and operationally efficient, ultimately driving sales and maximising return on space. You will translate commercial strategy and customer insights into optimised floor plans for new stores, refits, and strategic commercial projects within the Australian bp market.
Job Responsibilities
Strategic Space Optimisation
* Develop and manage the Macro Space Planning strategy for the retail network, ensuring alignment with the business's commercial goals, category growth ambitions, and customer journey blueprints.
* Design and produce detailed store floor plans and layouts for all new store openings, refurbishments/renewals, and major format changes.
* Strategically allocate space to departments and categories, determining appropriate size, location, and adjacencies to maximise sales performance and customer foot traffic flow.
* Continuously review and analyse store performance metrics (e.g., Sales Per Square Metre, ROS, category performance) to find opportunities and efficiency improvements.
* Integrate customer insights, market data, and local store demographics into space models to ensure layouts are relevant and customer centric.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Project Management
* Act as the key point of contact for Macro Space Planning across multiple departments, including:
* Category/Merchandise Teams: To understand range size, growth forecasts, and fixture requirements.
* Micro Space Planning (Planogram) Teams: To ensure smooth alignment between floor plans and detailed fixture planograms.
* Store Operations & Format Development: To ensure layouts are operationally efficient, aligned with safety standards, and executable in-store.
* Commercial/Finance Teams: To validate commercial viability and ROI of space initiatives.
* Supply Chain: To consider impacts on stock replenishment and back-of-house storage.
* Manage the end-to-end planning process for space projects, ensuring work are met on time and to quality for store opening/refit schedules.
* Coordinate and communicate all approved layout changes to the relevant store teams and project managers.
Data Analysis and Reporting
* Utilise reporting tools to analyse the effectiveness of current and proposed macro space allocations.
* Develop and present compelling reports and visualisations (e.g., heat-mapped floor plans) that clearly articulate space performance, insights, and recommended changes to senior partners.
* Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the store database, tracking all space dimensions, fixture types, and category allocations.
What you will need to be successful
Essential
* Experience in Macro Space Planning, Store Planning, or Retail Design within a large-scale Australian retail environment (FMCG, General Merchandise, or Apparel preferred).
* Strong analytical and commercial foresight, with the proven ability to link space decisions to sales, profit, and customer behavior.
* Exceptional partner management and communication skills (written and verbal) to influence outcomes at all levels.
* Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (data analysis, pivot tables, complex formulas) and PPT.
Desirable
* Tertiary qualifications in Business, Retail Management, Data Science, or a related field.
* Experience in Micro Space Planning (Planogramming).
* Exposure to A/B testing or trial methodology for new store formats or category adjacencies.
