Job Title: Environmental Health Officer
About the Role
This position presents an exceptional opportunity to enhance your skills across a broad spectrum of environmental and public health activities, spanning commercial, residential, rural, and industrial settings.
As an Environmental Health Officer, you will be responsible for regulating and inspecting premises including food shops, beauty salons, swimming pools, cooling towers, septic tanks, and various industrial and rural operations. You will also investigate public health complaints and pollution incidents, contributing to the wellbeing of the community.
A key part of your role will be assessing Development Applications for potential environmental impacts and actively promoting initiatives aimed at improving and maintaining the local environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Conduct inspections and compliance checks on regulated premises such as food outlets, beauty salons, swimming pools, and septic tanks.
* Investigate complaints related to pollution incidents, contaminated land, and public health risks.
* Assess Development Applications to evaluate potential environmental impacts and provide recommendations.
* Enforce relevant legislation including the Food Act, Local Government Act, Public Health Act, and Protection of the Environment Operations Act.
* Issue enforcement actions such as warnings, notices, penalty notices, and legal proceedings to ensure compliance.
* Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to promote public health and environmental standards.
* Prepare clear and concise written reports and communicate findings effectively.
Essential Criteria
* Degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
* Experience inspecting regulated premises including food shops, beauty salons, swimming pools, and septic tanks.
* Demonstrated experience assessing Development Applications with respect to environmental considerations.
* Strong knowledge of relevant legislation: Food Act, Local Government Act, Public Health Act, and Protection of the Environment Operations Act.
* Proven ability to investigate environmental and public health complaints.
* Sound judgement in determining and applying enforcement options to achieve legislative compliance.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Current driver's license.
