About the role
* The Senior Media Specialist will engage with leading national and local media outlets and members of the media and contribute to the Communications team's objectives by developing and executing media plans for campaigns, corporate announcements and responding to issues.
* Telstra's overall success is enabled by having a Media team that contributes to protecting and enhancing Telstra's reputation.
* The position reports to the Head of External Channels & Media.
IMPORTANT NOTE: the role is HYBRID and can be based in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane. Attendance in the office or on-site for specific events will be required from time to time. Interstate travel may be required on occasion.

What You'll Do
* Media liaison for proactive pitching and reactive media enquiries.
* Develop and deliver on media plans to support campaigns, projects, and major announcements and issues.
* Partner with Campaigns, Owned Editorial and Social Media teams within Communications to ensure media activity is fully integrated as needed.
* Contribute to the planning and delivery of Telstra's media engagement strategy.
* Develop media content (releases, statements, messages) for campaigns and issues.
* Manage day-to day media enquiries and related issues in a timely, effective, and efficient manner.
* Conduct media training for relevant executives.
* Act as Telstra spokesperson as appropriate.
* Develop and strengthen media relationships – this can be in digital, broadcast and print.
* Manage major and minor issues arising from media enquiries, including developing messages for social and employee channels.
* Provide strategic advice to the Communications Senior Leadership Team and Executives on media plans, execution and issues.
* Build and maintain stakeholder relationships internally and with national media.
* Conduct research, reporting and share insights on media performance for campaigns and issues.
About You
To be successful in the role, you'll bring skills and experience in:
* Media relations – deep knowledge and understanding of the Australian media landscape with proven experience effectively engaging with news and editorial teams. Existing relationships with mainstream media outlets and journalists expected.
* Relationship management – forming and maintaining relationships with key media stakeholders and managing media and broadcast relationships – including TV and radio, digital, print and emerging channels and platforms.
* Writing – ability to construct concise and compelling messages that connect with the audience and deliver compelling verbal communication—even when contentious—with confidence, influence, and sensitivity.
* Project management – overseeing multiple projects and campaigns with competing deadlines, while also effectively managing incoming enquires.
* Influencing and stakeholder management with an ability to provide strategic communication counsel to senior executives.
* Deep understanding of media channels, including digital and social, with knowledge and experience of when and how to use each medium to reach a target audience and achieve cut through.
* Team-oriented with strong interpersonal skills.
* Tertiary qualified in communications, journalism or other relevant discipline.
* Experience in telecommunications and technology related industries or ASX listed business would be an advantage.
