About the Role
The Asia Institute welcomes applications from Korean Studies specialists with a proven record of successfully teaching non-language subjects such as Korean society, politics, and international relations with a focus on the Korean peninsula. Specifically, upon appointment, this role will undertake teaching in the following 3 subjects:
1. Two Koreas in the World
2. Contemporary Korea
3. Korean Politics and Society
The incumbent will join an established programme in Korean language, making a significant contribution to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level, and contributing to research excellence within their discipline. They will adopt a student-centric approach in their teaching, ensuring an enriching and inclusive learning environment for all.
The research work of a Senior Lecturer will be acknowledged at a national level as being influential in expanding the knowledge of their discipline, whilst a Senior Lecturer will provide leadership in research, including research training and supervision.
Your responsibilities will include:
4. Subject coordination, including preparation and delivery of lectures/tutorials/seminars in Korean Studies, and supervision of sessional tutors
5. Curriculum design, development and innovation, including initiation, development, and review of subject material at the undergraduate (including 4th-year/ Honours) level
6. Development of technology-based teaching, learning and assessment programs and resources
7. Administrative tasks associated with the subjects taught, including consultation with students, marking and assessment
8. Design and delivery of overseas subjects and other student mobility programs
9. Regularly apply for teaching and learning innovation grants (with emphasis on national competitive and peer reviewed)
10. Honours and postgraduate supervision, including RHDs
11. Active and collegial collaboration within the discipline of Korean Studies to support the growth of the program
12. High quality publications arising from scholarship and research in line with the Faculty of Arts minimum expectations
13. Applications for external competitive research funding
14. Participation in the research activities of the discipline and School
15. Active participation in international and national collaborative scholarly activities, including conferences and research projects
16. Active engagement in service, leadership and coordination roles in the discipline, School and Faculty demonstrating respectful, inclusive behaviours at all times and building trust amongst colleagues
17. Active participation in committees (discipline, School, Faculty, University)
Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a committed and engaging educator with experience of teaching at tertiary level. You will also have the opportunity to conduct scholarly activity or academic research that informs and enhances your teaching. You will also possess well-established academic skills and strong academic performance.
You will also have:
18. A completed PhD in Korean Studies or related field with a focus on Korean politics and society or Korean international relations
19. A strong record in research with a developing publication profile in Korean Studies
20. Demonstrated expertise in Korean Studies, particularly the study of Korean society, politics, and/or international relations
21. Demonstrated course coordination experience
22. Ability to attract research grants
23. Ability to supervise honours and postgraduate coursework degree theses
24. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the learning orientations of a diverse student cohort, combined with the ability to apply this knowledge and understanding to create a highly inclusive student learning environment
25. Demonstrated professional and collegial behaviour of a very high standard (encompassing commitment to the Faculty’s Values and Behaviours outlined on page 5).
26. Working knowledge of the Korean language.
Additionally, at Level C:
27. Demonstrated course coordination, effective leadership and effective communication
28. Demonstrated capacity to attract research grants, especially for multidisciplinary and collaborative research
29. Demonstrated excellence in teaching including the capacity to initiate and oversee course development
30. A record of supervising honours and postgraduate degree theses
31. Ability to undertake original and path-setting research in the applicant’s field
