As a member of the Global Technology Services (GTS) division, you will contribute to all aspects of the technology products and services we deliver, from technical strategy and design to coding to deployment to operation. Our GTS products and services are leveraged across all Business Unit Platforms within the Bank to deliver industry‑leading software including CommBank App, Netbank, CommSee, CommSec, CommBiz and the main site.
This position will pre‑dominantly be based at Commonwealth Bank's state‑of‑the‑art Eveleigh offices, although we also provide flexible working conditions and the opportunity to work remotely or in a hybrid environment.
As a Staff Engineer, you will be a senior contributor within the Platform Hosting crew to improve delivery, reliability and scalability through automation within a DevSecOps framework. You will contribute to the crew by helping improve project outcomes, code quality, innovation and mentor junior and senior engineers.
To be successful in this role, you will cultivate strong, collaborative relationships with all stakeholders including Chapter Members, Chapter Leads and Product Owners to ensure alignment on strategic goals.
Responsibilities
- Infrastructure automation: Automate infrastructure provisioning, application deployments, and other repetitive tasks to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort
- Infrastructure as code: Implementing and managing infrastructure using code, enabling consistency, repeatability, and version control
- CI/CD: Developing and maintaining continuous integration and continuous delivery pipelines to automate the software release process
- Observability: Implementing and maintaining observability systems to ensure health and performance of platform and applications
- Being on call: Participate in on‑call rosters to respond to incidents and contribute to continuous improvement of system reliability
- Mentoring: Mentoring junior engineers providing technical guidance
Essential Competencies
- Strong programming and scripting skills in languages such as Python and Go
- Infrastructure as Code experience with tools such as Terraform and Ansible
- CI/CD experience with tools such as GitHub Actions or TeamCity
- DevSecOps experience
- Monitoring and Observability experience with Prometheus and Grafana
- Strong background as a systems administrator (Windows and/or Linux), with deep expertise in at least one operating system and familiarity with the other
Advantageous Competencies
- Experience in relevant industry and technical domain, demonstrating a deep understanding of industry trends, challenges, and best practices
- Familiarity with VMware and Nutanix platforms is advantageous
- Successfully led projects and mentored junior engineers
- Demonstrated experience in large corporate environments, with an understanding of control environments, configuration management, and reporting
- Ability to work in unstructured or uncertain environments, showing initiative and leadership
- Platform agnostic mindset, with a focus on building solutions that are not tied to a single technology stack
- Domain specific technical certification or education, enhancing credibility and demonstrating commitment to maintaining up-to-date expertise
- AWS experience, including the ability to deploy basic applications
- React & GraphQL experience
