Indigenous Dedicated Student Coach

The Indigenous Dedicated Student Coach is a program designed to provide a high level of personalised support to a specific cohort of students who identify as Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, and who are typically early in their studies, as their personal and primary point of contact.

The program pilot has showed that providing this level of personalised support to students improved students' preparedness to juggle work/family commitments and study therefore increasing the student's success and progression through their course of study.

Scope of the Role
* Connect students with their goals and motivations for enrolling and work with them to co-create a personalised success plan that provide opportunities to build on their motivations for study and skills required to succeed. Including, study expectations, time management, procrastination, motivation, and self-care.
* Established regular check in points with the student.
* Handle outbound coaching interventions for their students.

The Indigenous Dedicated Student Coach, will have a broad and versatile role that involves working closely with Outbound Student Support Leadership and Swinburne's Moondani Toombadool Centre (MTC). The main responsibility of this role is to keep your cohort of students engaged and motivated throughout their studies, from the start of the teaching period until the census date and beyond.

The Indigenous Dedicated Student Coach will also be the first point of contact for a wide range of enquiries from students, and the Coach will have the ability to decide when to increase support for students and when to transfer administrative issues to the Student Adviser and/or MTC team. This role requires proactivity, self-motivation, and able to manage your own workload effectively.

This role is for a 12 month contract.

About You
* An undergraduate degree in Psychology or similar.
* Excellent interpersonal communication skills to facilitate the provision of advice and support for students.
* Skills and experience in coaching or related area.
* Ability to reflect on practice and formulate strategies and processes to effect change.
* Comfortable to work within a phone-based support context.
* Ability to positively contribute to the development of an innovative, values based team culture.
* A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
* A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including the requirement for proper negotiation and consultation, with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples on matters relevant to the delivery of education services Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
* Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in an education/training setting.

You must be a First Nations person (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander).

OES considers that being Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under - sub-s 26(3) or s 28 of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic).

Therefore, it is a requirement that applicants/appointees must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent and that they identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.
