Position Details
Accounting Technician
Okemos Public Schools is seeking a detail-oriented and organized Accounting Technician to join the Finance/Business Office team. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, processing transactions, and supporting core accounting functions. This full-time position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment. The Accounting Technician works in compliance with established policies, procedures, and practices while utilizing the district's financial software system to process transactions and maintain assigned general ledger accounts accurately and in a timely manner.
Key Responsibilities
* Review and verify vendor invoices for accuracy, proper documentation, and authorization prior to entry into the financial system
* Schedule and process payments via ACH or check, ensuring timely disbursement and avoidance of late fees
* Respond to vendor and internal stakeholder inquiries regarding invoice status, payments, and billing discrepancies; resolve issues as needed
* Provide purchasing support, including assistance with vendor setup, vendor files, purchase orders, and financial software support; monitor and close purchase orders at year-end
* Generate and distribute invoices to customers and outside groups; process voids and adjustments; prepare and mail past-due notices and perform follow-up
* Ensure compliance with district policies, financial regulations, and tax requirements, including 1099 reporting
* Review and verify monthly credit card expenditures to ensure charges are supported by proper documentation
* Assist staff with credit card setup, limit changes, dispute resolution, and compromised card issues
* Process accounts receivable and cash receipts, including preparing deposits, verifying account coding, monitoring allocations, and preparing required financial reports
* Maintain vendor files and assist with annual 1099 processing
* Perform year-end activities including account reconciliations, journal entries, preparation of audit schedules and documentation, and provide support to auditors as needed
* Prepare and edit reports, forms, correspondence, and other materials, some of which may be confidential
* Perform general office support tasks including handling correspondence and email, answering phones, maintaining files, sorting and distributing mail, and assisting with mailings
* Support internal stakeholders with product setup and updates in RevTrak to facilitate streamlined school payments
* Assist in evaluating, designing, implementing, and monitoring department systems and procedures to improve operational effectiveness
* Process accounts receivable and cash receipts, including preparing deposits, verifying account coding, monitoring allocations, and preparing required financial reports
* Stay current on accounting regulations and best practices
* Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience
* Associate degree in accounting, business, or related field required
* Bachelor's degree preferred
* Minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible accounting or bookkeeping experience preferred
* Experience in a public school district or governmental accounting environment preferred
Technical Skills
* Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas and basic data analysis
* Experience working in an integrated financial/accounting system preferred
* Ability to learn and adapt to new financial software and systems
Knowledge and Competencies
* Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* High level of accuracy and attention to detail
* Ability to prioritize competing deadlines and manage interruptions
* Sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential information
* Effective written and verbal communication skills
* Commitment to providing responsive and professional customer service
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
This position is primarily office-based and involves extended periods of sitting and computer use. Regular use of standard office equipment is required. The work environment is typically quiet. Reasonable accommodations will be provided in accordance with applicable law.
