Overview

The Perioperative Technician supports safe & efficient surgical services by maintaining infection control standards, preparing & managing surgical equipment and assisting with perioperative operations.

The Team

Surgical and Perioperative Services forms part of Hospitals South within the Department of Health and delivers high‐quality, safe, and efficient perioperative care to support surgical services across the region. The team works collaboratively across Operating Theatres, the Central Sterilising Department, and Sterile Stock Rooms to ensure the readiness, safety, and availability of surgical environments, equipment, and instrumentation.

The service plays a critical role in infection prevention and control, patient safety, and the smooth coordination of perioperative activities. Working within a values‐based environment, the team places patients first and works closely with nursing, clinical, and support staff to deliver reliable perioperative services that contribute to improved health outcomes for patients and the Tasmanian community.

The Role

As a Perioperative Technician, you will work as part of the Surgical and Perioperative Services team to support safe and effective perioperative care by maintaining high standards of hygiene, infection control, and equipment readiness within the Operating Theatre environment. The role operates under the supervision of nursing staff in a dynamic, fast‐paced clinical setting.

Key responsibilities include:

* Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene of Operating Rooms, specialised equipment, and perioperative environments in accordance with infection control guidelines and AS/NZS 4187 standards.
* Preparing, storing, and coordinating surgical instrumentation, consumables, and stock levels to support scheduled and emergency theatre activity.
* Supporting perioperative operations through effective communication, basic patient care assistance under supervision, troubleshooting of equipment, and participation in quality, safety, and training initiatives.

You will need:

* Demonstrated knowledge of infection control principles and the ability to work in compliance with Australian Standards (AS/NZS 4187).
* Proven ability to coordinate and prioritise equipment, instrumentation, and stock requirements within an Operating Theatre environment.
* Well‐developed communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare setting under pressure.

Employment Details

Multiple fixed term, part-time, shift worker positions, working up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible until 2 November 2026.

*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.

Salary: $67,193 to $72,126 pro rata per annum + our Employer 12% superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.

* Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022
