Reading Specialist position available for the 26-27 school year. Hours will be 7:09am - 2:50pm.

TITLE: Reading Specialist

CATEGORY: Professional Staff

JOB SUMMARY

Plans, organizes, controls and directs the classroom to provide an educational program for pupils in grades K through 12. Assists classroom teachers regarding district literacy initiatives; models literacy strategies, resources and routines for effective literacy implementation in the classroom.

QUALIFICATIONS

* Possesses Master's Degree, along with valid Pennsylvania certificate as a Reading Specialist.
* Assures compliance with Employment Eligibility, Criminal History Record, Pre-Employment Drug Testing, and Physical Examination/TB Test Standard.
* Demonstrates proficiency in the English language, with strong oral and written communication skills.
* Possesses ability to deal courteously and tactfully with school personnel and the public.
* Possesses ability to operate a computer, all software, and other office equipment as assigned.
* Possesses ability to maintain high level of confidentiality.
* Establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
* Possesses valid driver's license if position requires travel around district.
* KNOWLEDGE OF:
* Data analysis, targeting instruction, and intervention services.
* Current trends and research concerning the growth and development of children.
* Applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures.

PRIMARY JOB FUNCTIONS

The position holder must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. It is the responsibility of the employee to inform the District of any and all reasonable accommodations that will be required.

* Provides planned learning experiences in order to motivate students and best utilize the available time for instruction; identifies and adjusts instructional objectives in terms of student need using grade level standards and assessments.
* Develops lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and small group, as well as whole group, instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
* Creates lesson plans that comply with PA Core Standards and/or PA Academic Standards.
* Analyzes school and individualized student data and plans appropriate means to address areas of need.
* Provides instruction to students with special needs in accordance with IEP, utilizing support services as required; participates in IEP meetings as appropriate.
* Distributes, collects and grades instructional materials, homework and tests; determines student grades and forwards to appropriate personnel.
* Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom; develops self-discipline, responsibility, and leadership skills in the students.
* Supports and assists in maintaining district discipline policy and the site discipline plan.
* Evaluates students' academic and social growth, maintains appropriate records and prepares progress reports; communicates with parents on the individual student's progress.
* Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students achieve literacy standards.
* Meets with classroom teachers to analyze student needs in order to recommend appropriate literacy strategies, resources, programs and/or routines to meet student needs.
* Contributes to the continuous improvement of literacy instruction as it relates to content area curriculum and district initiatives.
* Conducts instruction based on the written and Board approved curriculum.
* Adheres to the Pennsylvania Professional Standards and Practices Commission Code of Conduct.
* Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, emotional, social and learning problems.
* Creates a classroom environment which is conducive for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers and which includes models of high standards and expectations for student work.
* Administers multiple-measure assessment tests in accordance with the testing program.
* Serves as a literacy resource and consultant to the teaching staff and administrators.
* Serves on district literacy committees, as required.
* Attends grade-level and building data analysis and literacy improvement meetings, as assigned.
* Assumes responsibility and works with minimum supervision.
* Maintains regular and timely attendance.

SECONDARY JOB FUNCTIONS

* Maintains professional competence through staff development activities and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
* Administers to the health needs of students, as needed.
* Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
* Participates in meetings, conferences and in-services as assigned.
* Performs related duties as assigned.
