About the role
We are seeking experienced EL1 Assistant Directors to support a large Commonwealth policy and research function. These roles lead complex policy work and provide high-quality advice to senior executives and government decision-makers across a range of priority policy and reform activities.
Assistant Directors operate with a high level of autonomy and are responsible for managing policy projects, guiding junior staff, and delivering timely, well-reasoned advice in a fast-paced and sensitive environment.
Key responsibilities
* Lead the development, implementation and review of complex policy initiatives
* Provide authoritative advice on legislative, regulatory and policy matters
* Interpret legislation and support activities associated with new or amended legislation
* Draft high-quality ministerial and senior executive briefings, correspondence, reports and discussion papers
* Gather, analyse and interpret data, research and evidence to inform policy advice
* Manage competing priorities and deliver outcomes within tight timeframes
* Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
* Support responses to high-profile inquiries and whole-of-government priorities
* Provide guidance and support to APS-level staff within the team
Skills and experience
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
* Strong experience leading public policy development and analysis
* Excellent written communication skills, including drafting for senior executives and ministers
* Sound judgement and the ability to provide clear, practical advice on complex issues
* Proven stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills
* Ability to work independently with limited supervision and show initiative
* Experience working in complex government or regulated environments
Experience in health, wellbeing, social policy, research, evaluation or legislative reform will be highly regarded.

* Engagement is on a labour hire basis
* A minimum baseline security clearance is required (sponsorship available)
* Flexible working arrangements may be available by agreement
