Primary objective
Lead, manage, develop, and implement communication strategies to achieve departmental goals, including community
engagement, forecasting and reporting.
Context statement
The Senior Communications Officer provides strategic communication advice and leads the delivery of integrated
communication activities to support the Department of Corrections' priorities in a complex and high‑profile operational
environment. The role manages projects, supports executive decision‑making, mitigates reputational risk and ensures
compliance with whole‑of‑government and NT Government communication standards.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide strategic advice on communication approaches and context.
2. Identify, plan, create and implement a range of communications projects and activities, including planning and logistics,
resource allocation and consideration of media, political and stakeholder implications consistent with the objectives,
strategic directions and priorities of the department and government.
1. Support communications activities for emergency management or biosecurity incursion responses, including
preparedness activities, responding in a positive, calm, and flexible manner to change and uncertainty.
1. Establish strong working relationships with stakeholders, including industry and agency experts, to build understanding
of agency initiatives, issues, and sensitivities; and be responsive to stakeholder needs and expectations.
1. Ensure programs meet and adhere to Northern Territory Government branding, digital, communication and procurement
policies and guidelines.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven experience in communications and marketing project coordination/management and evaluation, including
political and stakeholder implications with effective and timely outcomes.
2. Proven experience providing advice on communication policies and guidelines in accordance with relevant legislation,
frameworks, and branding guidelines.
1. Practical, contemporary knowledge of the broader strategic communication and marketing industry, including
publications, media management, exhibitions, creative graphic design concepts, electronic, social, and digital platforms
and networks, promotions, advertising management, market research and events or product launches.
1. Demonstrated experience managing multiple, and sometimes conflicting, workloads, while maintaining attention to detail.
2. Strong and clear interpersonal and communication skills, able to express ideas clearly and fluently, both orally and in
writing.
6. Ability to effectively lead and provide guidance and support to others.
7. Demonstrated experience using business management systems and processes, including procurement and coordination.
Desirable
1. Relevant tertiary qualification.
