PRIMARY DETAIL
- Salary: From $52.46 - $56.54 per hour (HEW Level 4)
- Appointment Type: Casual opportunity
- Location: Macquarie University (North Ryde)

Working under the direction of the Museum Education and Outreach Coordinator, the Museum Education Assistant will deliver educational program content to school students from NSW syllabus stages 1 to 6. This position may also have the opportunity to support museum open days and events.

Key responsibilities:
- Deliver and support educational programs such as gallery tours, pre-prepared seminars and facilitate gallery-based activities- Provide assistance at museum open days or other events- Setting out and packing down of museum objects for object-based learning sessions- Comply with Work Health and Safety and Child Protection Policy and other procedures

About You

You will be a self-motivated professional with a solid grounding in archaeology or history with a strong capacity to present educational material to school students in an engaging way. You are passionate about museums, cultural heritage and education. You enjoy working independently and as part of a team.

About Us

The Gale History Museum at Macquarie University is part of the Faculty of Arts and is home to 18,000 historic artefacts ranging from the prehistoric to the 21st century. Opened in 2021 as the Macquarie University History Museum, in May 2025 it was renamed in honour of Dr Janet Gale and her late husband Dr William Gale.

The Museum incorporates the collections of the former Museum of Ancient Cultures and Australian History Museum and features coins from its partner collection the Australian Centre for Numismatic Studies. Its collections serve to enhance the learning experiences of Macquarie University students, and it is open to the general public. The museum seeks to:
- foster collaborative research and publications with national and international partners- engage students through participatory learning experiences- enable access and exploration of collections through permanent and temporary exhibitions, publications, public events and educational programs- drive ethical museum policies and practices.

The History Museum is a showpiece of the Faculty of Arts' precinct and includes modern curatorial facilities and space for temporary as well as permanent/semi-permanent exhibitions.

Essential Criteria- Experience handling museum objects and strong understanding of object handling procedures- Good verbal communication skills- Ability to work independently and as part of a team- A degree, or partial completion of a degree, in archaeology or history (ancient or modern)

Desirable Criteria- Experience with the delivery of educational programs to school children- A solid understanding of archaeology, ancient history and modern history, (particularly Australian History)
