Role Overview
The Senior Telecommunications OT Engineer will lead critical operational technology (OT) telecommunications initiatives across industrial environments. This contract role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast‑paced, infrastructure‑heavy settings and can deliver high‑impact outcomes within a short timeframe. The engineer will support, optimise, and enhance communications systems that underpin essential operational networks.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee the design, configuration, and maintenance of OT telecommunications systems, including radio networks, fibre, microwave, and industrial Ethernet.
Lead troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis for complex communication network issues across operational environments.
Implement upgrades, patches, and system improvements to enhance reliability, resilience, and security.
Collaborate with OT, IT, engineering, and field operations teams to ensure seamless integration of telecom systems with broader operational infrastructure.
Conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance with relevant standards, safety requirements, and regulatory frameworks.
Produce high‑quality technical documentation, network diagrams, and change management records.
Provide expert guidance during project planning, commissioning, and deployment phases.
Mentor junior engineers and support knowledge transfer across teams.
Required Skills & Experience
Extensive experience in OT telecommunications engineering within sectors such as utilities, mining, energy, transport, or heavy industry.
Strong knowledge of radio communications (UHF/VHF, trunked radio, digital radio systems).
Hands‑on experience with fibre networks, microwave links, multiplexing, and industrial networking technologies.
Familiarity with SCADA communications, serial protocols, and critical infrastructure networking.
Solid understanding of cybersecurity principles as they apply to OT environments.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver outcomes within tight timeframes.
Excellent analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
Qualifications
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related discipline.
Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNP, industrial networking, radio communications) are highly regarded.
Industry‑specific safety or site‑access certifications may be required depending on the environment.
