Western Heights College is a government co-educational single-campus secondary college located in the heart of the Hamlyn Heights, Herne Hill and the Geelong West region just a short drive from Geelong city centre, the Geelong Ring Road and nearby rural towns. The college's purpose is to empower students to strive for success and excellence in their educational journey with a focus on learning growth, high expectations, holistic well-being, creativity and innovation reflected strongly in our three values: responsibility, courage and inclusion. By the end of Term ******, a new school gymnasium will be ready for use by students and the community.
We have a strong focus on literacy and numeracy across the college, global learning and thinking are a priority, and we celebrate cultural diversity by offering EAL and Mandarin as languages. The college is partnered with sister schools in China.
Leadership, interpersonal development and student voice and agency in learning are focal points of our offerings, including exceptional dance, music, theatre studies, technology, STEM and art programs. The campus hosts camps and excursions to local, interstate and international destinations such as Mount Buller, Kokoda, Central Australia and China, and runs tours to the USA, UK, New Zealand and Europe. Students also participate in the School for Student Leadership Opportunities for Year 9.
All students belong to learning communities with developmental personal learning goals and pathways plans, supported by a daily mentoring program. Years 7 and 8 are supported by teacher teams focused on building key skills, pages ***** and knowledge. An innovative personalised programme for Years 9 and 10 includes access to VCE, the Head Start Program, School-Based Apprenticeships (SBA) and Vocational Education Training (VET). Years 11 and 12 choose from a wide range of studies, combining academic VCE, vocational and applied learning programmes and certificates (VET/VM).
