About the Role
Join our dedicated team as a Medical Consultant Rural Generalist – Emergency/Inpatients and serve as Head of Unit (HOU). Based within the Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network, you will lead the clinical management of patients across both the Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe and effective care. Your role also includes providing after-hours Code Blue support and contributing to a 24/7 roster.
You'll be instrumental in shaping and advancing care models, such as fast‐tracing, nurse‐led strategies, and criteria‐led discharges, while promoting innovation and collaboration across teams. This position offers engagement in strategic planning, quality improvement activities, clinical governance, and staff education—including the supervision and training of junior staff.
The HOU appointment is for a minimum term of 12 months, up to a maximum of 5 years, and includes the Small Unit Managerial Allowance as outlined in the SA Medical Officers Award. Reporting directly to the Executive Director Medical Services, the HOU will allocate up to two days per fortnight for non‐clinical time to support service planning, team development, and clinical governance.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead clinical management of patients in the Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit.
* Provide after‐hours Code Blue support and contribute to a 24/7 roster.
* Develop and implement care models such as fast‐tracing, nurse‐led strategies, and criteria‐led discharges.
* Engage in strategic planning, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities.
* Supervise and educate undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
* Support service planning, team development, and clinical governance during allocated non‐clinical time.
Key Qualifications
* Bachelor of Medicine; Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent.
* Fellowship of the Australian College Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) or the Royal Australian College of General Practice (RACGP), and registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist.
* Extensive experience in rural clinical practice.
* Experience in the delivery of emergency care.
* Demonstrated skills in resuscitation, airway maintenance and circulatory support.
* Experience in the operational management of retrievals of critically ill patients.
* Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Experience with a diverse client group, including mental health clients and paediatrics.
* Experience supervising and teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.
* Proven delivery of high quality and safe care consistent with the National Safety and Quality Health Care Service Standards.
Remuneration and Conditions
* Total Indicative Remuneration (TIRP) includes award salary, managerial allowance, remote call allowance, professional development, A&R Allowance, Super, and Private Practice Arrangements (if applicable).
* This is a multiple positions part‐time vacancy; hours to be negotiated and salary adjusted according to actual hours worked.
* Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Criminal History Check and required Immunisation compliance.
* SA Health Services must implement the Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination policy for vaccine‐preventable diseases.
