Following a period of significant growth where headcount and fleet capacity have doubled, they are now seeking a dedicated Payroll Manager to bring us through a journey of system implementations, automation and uplift of the payroll and workforce management function bringing stability and expertise to their finance function.
The Opportunity
This is a critical standalone position for someone looking who enjoys the uplift and progression of payroll systems and processes. The current environment is manual, high-touch, and requires a deep understanding of industrial instruments, and the business has engaged a specialised payroll consulting firm to identify, implement and go live on top tier products to optimise this function.
You will manage the immediate complexity of a weekly payroll for 250+ staff including operators under strict EBA conditions, while playing a pivotal role in the transition to a modern Time & Attendance solution. This is a rare opportunity to manage the "here and now" while helping to build the systems of the future.
What You Will Do
* End-to-End Management: Take full control of three weekly payroll runs for over 250 employees, ensuring accuracy across permanent staff, casuals, and operators.
* Complex Interpretation: Manually interpret timesheets and entitlements against the complex industrial awards for operators and logistics personnel.
* Process Integrity: Manage data entry from Excel to Xero with precision, calculating complex allowances, penalties, and overtime without reliance on automated interpretation.
* Compliance & Reporting: Oversee all statutory obligations including STP, superannuation, and payroll tax, while managing year-end processes.
* Transformation: Work closely with leadership to scope and implement a new T&A/Payroll system (e.g., UKG/Humanforce), moving the business away from manual processes. Included in this will be testing of the new platforms and go live phases of the implementation.
* Advisory: Act as the trusted point of contact for all payroll queries, providing clear and professional support to staff and management.
What You Will Bring
To succeed in this role, you need to be resilient, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with manual data while having the vision to drive improvement.
* Experience: proven history in a high-volume, end-to-end payroll role, specifically within construction, civil, or heavy industrial environments.
* Technical Knowledge: A robust understanding of Australian payroll legislation and the confidence to interpret complex EBAs and Awards and how they will translate into the future state process.
* Systems Capability: High proficiency in Excel is non-negotiable due to current processes. Experience with Xero and exposure to T&A implementation is distinct advantage.
* Communication: You are approachable and capable of building rapport with a diverse workforce, from the depot floor to the executive office.
* Flexibility: Ability to work from the head office, with some initial travel to site for handover and training.
