Two Positions Available: Accountant & Finance Officer
Are you ready to take the next step in your finance career? Mackay Regional Council is seeking two motivated professionals to join our Corporate Services team in Financial Services. These roles offer the chance to make a real impact across council programs, supporting financial planning, analysis, and reporting in a dynamic local government environment.
About The Roles
You will provide comprehensive financial support and advice to all programs within council, contributing to effective budgeting, financial management, and compliance. Depending on your experience, you may be appointed as a Finance Officer or Accountant (Levels 3–5).
Key Responsibilities
* Analyse financial data and provide informed advice and recommendations to council programs.
* Assist with budget development, monitoring, and reporting.
* Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
* Prepare and complete annual financial statements and support audit processes.
* Undertake treasury functions (cash flow, bank reconciliations, investments, reserves, loans).
* Administer grants, subsidies, and statutory/taxation obligations.
* Support and guide team members (Accountant Level 5).
* Liaise with internal teams, external auditors, government departments, and the public.
* Ensure compliance with workplace health and safety (WH\&S) requirements.
About You
We're looking for candidates who demonstrate:
* Tertiary qualifications in Business, Finance, Commerce, or Accounting (or working towards).
* Eligibility for membership with CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants ANZ.
* Experience in accounting, bookkeeping, budgeting, and project costing.
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, and initiative skills.
* Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
* Knowledge of accounting systems, standards, and relevant legislation.
* Ability to prioritise tasks and work both independently and as part of a team.
* Understanding of local government financial procedures (desirable).
Selection Criteria
* Experience with integrated accounting systems.
* Budgeting and project costing expertise.
* Ability to provide sound financial advice.
* Knowledge and application of accounting standards and legislation.
* Effective time management and organisational skills.
