About the role:
AWC has partnered with Traditional Owners of the Ngalurrtju Aboriginal Land Trust, Northern Territory (formerly Mt Wedge Station) north-west of Alice Springs. The partnership project aims to deliver effective conservation across the vast 323,128 ha Ngalurrtju Aboriginal Land Trust, by applying AWC's approach to conservation alongside strong engagement with Traditional Owners in planning and through direct employment of Indigenous Rangers to deliver the conservation program.
An established Steering Committee of Anmatyerr, Warlpiri and Luritja Traditional Owners guides management activities and endorses the program to ensure they align with the partnership's mission of 'working two-ways to protect country and culture'.
The Indigenous Ranger Coordinator is an exciting new position within the team that will assist in establishing a small team of Rangers to be employed on a casual basis to undertake works achieve the objectives of the Ngalurrtju Conservation Science and Land Management Program. The Indigenous Ranger Coordinator will work closely with the Ngalurrtju Operations Manager to develop and implement a works program for the Women's Ranger team. The Indigenous Ranger Coordinator will provide day-to-day planning and coordination of the Ranger Team and actively support the growth and development of an engaged, skilled and empowered Women's Ranger Team.
To succeed in this role, you will need to be passionate about the effective conservation of Australian biodiversity and committed to mentoring and training Ngalurrtju Traditional Owners, specifically Women, to be meaningfully engaged in protecting their country and culture.
Key relationships of this role include:
* Ngalurrtju Reference Group (Traditional Owner Representatives)
* Ngalurrtju Operations and Science team
* Central Land Council
* AWC Indigenous Rangers

Critical competencies:
* Cultural awareness: knowledge of and interest in Australian First Nations culture and a strong willingness to work in a cross-cultural workplace.
* A passion for conservation: knowledge of and strong interest in Australian ecology and conservation issues, particularly in relation to the arid and semi-arid regions.
* Working with people: willingness and ability to lead a small team and work independently without supervision.
* Getting things done: demonstrated planning and organisational skills, including an ability to prioritise and execute multiple tasks in an efficient manner.
* Practical skills: ability to perform a wide range of practical tasks (e.g. building construction, fencing, engine maintenance, machinery operation) and routine repairs and maintenance; ability to operate a 4WD vehicle safely in difficult conditions.
* Resourcefulness: ability to improvise and problem-solve, developing practical solutions with limited resources.
* Land management: knowledge and experience in practical land management programs: fire management, weed control, feral animal control and threatened species management.
* Living in the bush: previous experience and ability to work and live in a rural or remote area; ability to supervise teams in geographically diverse locations.
* Information Technology: basic computer skills including Word, Excel, Web browser and Email.
* Willingness to travel.

Qualifications:
Formal qualifications in a relevant discipline (e.g. ecology, conservation land management or community development) would be an advantage, however, is less important than cultural awareness and experience working with remote First Nations communities and a good track record of delivering 'on-ground' results.
Licenses, Certificates and/or Training:
* Valid manual driver's license (4WD experience essential)
* Senior first aid certificate (remote certification - highly desirable).

PLEASE NOTE : This role is initially offered as a 12-month fixed-term full-time contract, with the possibility for an extension or permanency. The role is based in Alice Springs with regular trips to Ngalurrtju (2.5hr drive), where basic on-site accommodation is available.
