Location: Local Council
Employment Type: Casual (38hrs a week, with potential for full-time permanent positions)
About the Role:
Are you passionate about promoting community safety and responsible behaviour? We’re looking for a Community Laws Officer to play a key role in ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations. This position involves investigating complaints, enforcing laws related to animal management, parking enforcement, and litter control, as well as providing valuable education to the community. Key Responsibilities:
- Investigate community concerns and enforce relevant Local Laws and State Government Acts.
- Respond to customer requests and complaints, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.
- Collect evidence, conduct interviews, and prepare court briefs for legal actions when required.
- Support the implementation of animal management plans and promote responsible pet ownership.
- Engage with a variety of stakeholders, including residents, businesses, and external agencies like the RSPCA and Victoria Police.
- Proactively address safety issues and collaborate with other teams to enhance community safety.
- Provide clear and concise communication and advice to both internal and external stakeholders regarding community laws and regulations.
- Ensure accurate and up-to-date record-keeping of complaints, investigations, and enforcement actions in relevant databases.
Key Requirements:
- Strong customer service skills, with the ability to handle difficult situations and negotiate effective solutions.
- Proven experience in investigative roles, including evidence collection, interviews, and report preparation.
- Comfort and confidence in handling animals, particularly dogs and cats, with a focus on personal safety.
- Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation and regulations effectively.
- Proficiency with technology systems and applications for record-keeping and reporting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
- A degree or diploma in a relevant field (e.g., animal control, law enforcement, or investigations) is required.
- Strong understanding of legislation and investigative procedures.
- A valid driver’s license, police check, and working with children check are required.
- Availability for overtime or after-hours call-outs when necessary.
