Job Description

As a Structural Engineer at SpaceX, you will play a critical role in the development of our next-generation vertical integration facilities. These facilities will enable the path to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Responsibilities

* Own structural engineering work packages for the production site design and development, with a heavy focus on integrated high-rise facilities:
o Design elements of multidisciplinary, multistory projects for new construction and modifications to existing structures. This includes all phases of project development, from conceptual feasibility studies, preliminary design through construction completion.
o Perform standard and complex structural engineering analyses, designs, and calculations using standard methodology and principles and other viable approaches. Our structures are unique with few precedents and aggressive schedules, ability to think outside the box is a must.
o Perform building-level structural analysis and design for large steel and reinforced concrete buildings, including shallow and deep foundations. The candidate will need to quickly iterate at the conceptual level to drive rapid project development.
o Create structural design drawings, calculations, and design summary presentations.
o Estimate material quantities, schedules, and costs for construction projects.
o Write and manage construction contracts with subcontractors across multiple disciplines.
o Perform project control tasks, including project scheduling, budgeting, and cost control.
o Manage multi-discipline design and construction projects, including coordination of typical systems found in high-rise buildings (MEP, HVAC, etc).
o Interact with other engineers, contractors, fabricators, and various stakeholders.
o Provide direct onsite field observations and resolve field conflicts in real time.
* Direct all field personnel to achieve completion of the project on schedule, within budget, with quality workmanship that conforms to the original plans and specifications.
* Maintain the construction schedule, identify and solve problems.
* Maintain a positive relationship with the SpaceX end user, contractors, suppliers, and other Space X employees.
* Engage with new vendors to shore up our pool of contractors that have the ability to execute high-rise projects.
* Prepare schedules and supervise the completion of the final punch list.
* Promote job site safety as a top priority, encourage safe work practices, and rectify job site hazards immediately.
* Ensure all company employees and contractors are adhering to the company safety policy.
* Interact with tradesman, contractors, and building officials to coordinate and execute maintenance, repair, and installation of facilities support equipment.
* Communicate updates to budgetary, drawings, and design requirements to management and engineering.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in structural engineering, civil engineering, or other engineering discipline.
* 1+ years of experience with the design or build of structural infrastructure.

Preferred Skills and Experience

* 3-4 years of professional experience in civil/structural engineering.
* Design experience with steel and/or concrete high-rise design projects, including design and analysis of primary gravity and lateral force resisting systems.

* Experience with temporary stability analysis during construction.
* Familiarity with various types of steel erection equipment (tower cranes, large crawlers, etc).
* Professional Engineering (PE) or Structural Engineering (SE) license.
* Knowledge of American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) steel manual, American Concrete Institute (ACI) code 318, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7, International Building Codes (IBC).
* Knowledge of CMAA design guidelines for overhead cranes and supporting structures.
* Knowledge of AISC Design Guide 7 (Industrial Building Design).
* Experience creating structural detail drawings in AutoCAD, Revit, NX, Solidworks, or similar drafting programs (Revit being the most pertinent).
* Knowledge of ETABS, SAFE, SAP2000, ANSYS, FEMAP, or similar analysis design programs.
* Understanding of other disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, geotechnical, and surveying. In particular, coordination of high-rise systems during pre-construction through substantial completion.
* Experience reading, reviewing, and approving shop and fabrication drawings.
