About Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS)

Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) committed to providing holistic primary health care services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations in Derby and its surrounding areas. We emphasise creative public health programs alongside comprehensive health services that are culturally appropriate and tailored to the needs of the community.

Our organisation operates under various Service Agreements with both Commonwealth and State departments, ensuring we collaborate effectively with government and private health delivery organisations to enhance health outcomes in our community.

Position Overview

The Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) Educator role will be based in Derby on a Full-time basis. The role plays a crucial role in the national initiative aimed at reducing smoking prevalence among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This position focuses on delivering educational programs and community-driven activities that raise awareness about the health impacts of smoking, particularly among vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and youth.

The TIS Educator is responsible for designing and implementing health promotion activities, fostering partnerships, and advocating for smoke-free environments while supporting community members in accessing smoking cessation services.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct training and educational sessions on tobacco control strategies for community organisations, including schools and workplaces.
- Coordinate and facilitate smoking cessation events throughout the Derby region.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with local organisations to promote smoke-free initiatives.
- Advocate for Aboriginal clients in navigating smoking cessation services effectively.
- Ensure program activities align with TIS work plan KPIs and undergo thorough evaluation.
- Guide the TIS team in delivering culturally appropriate care and developing relevant smoking cessation resources.
- Participate in data collection and present program evaluations at national conferences.
- Provide supportive transport and resources to clients seeking smoking cessation assistance.
- Act as a role model by promoting non-smoking behaviours within the community.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking a motivated and culturally aware individual who is dedicated to improving health outcomes in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, a commitment to community engagement, and a proven track record in health promotion.

- High integrity in maintaining confidentiality and managing sensitive information.
- Proficient in computer skills, including word processing and email communication.
- Prior experience in health-related roles, such as Liaison Officer or Health Worker.
- Must identify as a non-smoker and hold a National Police Clearance.
- Current "C" Class Driver’s Licence and First Aid or CPR certification required.
- WA Working with Children’s Check and COVID-19 vaccination status are mandatory.

Salary & Benefits

The annual salary for this position is $86,401 pro rata, complemented by:

- Accommodation Allowance of $7,800 per annum
- Annual Airfare allowance of $1,683 (after 12 months of service)
- Salary Sacrifice up to $30,000 per annum
