An opportunity has arisen to join our team at the Ipswich base within ESNEFT.We are inviting applications for a full-time substantive post in the ESNEFT infection service, suitable for candidates on the specialist register with a qualification in Medical Microbiology, consultants dual accredited in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, or Consultant Clinical Scientists who have completed a training programme in Medical Microbiology.Qualifications required for medical consultants include FRCPath(UK) or equivalent, full GMC registration, and inclusion on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council in Medical Microbiology or Microbiology/Infectious Diseases, within six months of CCT or its equivalent at the interview date.Candidates applying as Consultant Clinical Scientists are expected to have completed a recognised Higher Specialty Scientific Training (HSST) programme in Medical Microbiology and to have passed the FRCPath(UK) examinations for infection training.Duties of the PostThis job description covers the main responsibilities of the post. Applicants are encouraged to enquire about any points they are unsure of.Provide leadership in the management, provision, and development of Microbiology and Infection Control Services.Undertake laboratory work, including advice on diagnostic samples, validation, interpretation of results, and policy development for sample examination.Participate in diagnosis and management of patients through liaison with patients, clinicians, and other hospital and community staff.Engage in business planning, implementation of new methods, and forward planning for staff and equipment.Review departmental policies, SOPs, and protocols regularly, in line with Trust policies on document control and risk management.Maintain effective communication with clinical colleagues and service users, including infectious disease control and health protection teams.Advise on infection control issues in collaboration with microbiology and infection control nursing colleagues.We are ESNEFT, providing hospital and community health services to nearly one million people across east Suffolk and north Essex. The post involves direct clinical care, supporting professional activities, and out-of-hours on-call payments. The team shares infection control responsibilities, and specialist roles may rotate among colleagues.Part-time candidates will be considered, with job content adjusted accordingly. Remote working options are available for certain roles, especially for consultants not required on-site for clinical duties.
