The Ruby Developer will work with the team to extend an existing Rails application to support entry and updating of additional data types.
We are looking for an experienced Rails/Ruby developer with excellent teamwork skills, to work full/part (0.6 FTE minimum), onsite at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (Canberra), online/remote, or hybrid.
A knowledge of, or interest in, names and taxonomy of living things would be an advantage but we are keen to hear from candidates who have the ability to listen and respond intelligently to requirements regardless of prior experience in the domain.
Resourcing Requirements
The appointed Rails Developer will supply their own workstation/laptop and development environment software which must integrate with current NSL practices.
Experience
Suitable candidates will have demonstrated experience with one or more similar projects. Responses must provide a summary of at least one previous project describing the project objective, developer's role, and the quality of the result, and provide links to the project results (i.e. website) and, if possible, to a code repository with examples.
Selection Criteria
1. Demonstrated prior experience developing high quality online interfaces for data entry and update using the Rails framework. (30%)
2. Excellent technical skills including some or all of: Rails, Ruby, Postgresql, JQuery, Bootstrap, Minitest, Git, AWS hosting, Jenkins. (50%)
3. Ability to work productively in a small team environment. Willing to explain, listen and discuss code and tasks. Effective written and verbal communication skills. (20%)
4. Experience or interest in working with biological taxonomy data including names published in accordance with the provisions of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants (ICN) and the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) would be an advantage.
