The Role
The Preparator will complete a number of tasks across the Memorial’s galleries and storage warehouses. The role will be required to work on the design and fabrication of object mounts for the Memorial’s galleries as well as any modifications and maintenance of existing mounts within all of the Memorial’s galleries. The role will be required to liase with curators, project managers and material specialists to assess collection items; design and document mounts; and fabricate mounts for a wide variety of object types and display requirements. The key component of the role is that the Preparator will also be required to install mounts, objects and displays in the galleries in collaboration with the Collection Services, Exhibitions and Gallery Development team, as well as working on the Memorial’s annual changeovers, loans preparation, temporary exhibitions and future travelling exhibitions.
Core Responsibilities

* Assess a range of collection items to design innovative and aesthetically sensitive mounts that provide the best possible support for collection objects on display;
* Interpret exhibition design drawings;
* High quality fabrication of mounts using TIG welding and a range of other innovative techniques;
* Collaborate and build relationships with a small team of preparators and fabrication specialists;
* Establish productive stakeholder relationships across the Memorial;
* Provide verbal and written reports on progress of the mount making tasks to managers, committees and Executive as required;
* Install mounts and objects on display;
* Play a leading role in the WHS aspects of the mount making workshop including safe operation of equipment, safety documentation and contributing to a safety culture within the team;
* Assist with the maintenance of the fabrication workshop including arranging servicing of equipment, monitoring supplies, arranging procurement and liaising with suppliers and other external producers;
* Actively engage as part of the Collection Services team to foster effective team relationships and contribute to section and Memorial goals.

Position Eligibility
* Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
* All applicants external to AWM that are offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a National Police Check, even if they currently hold a security clearance. The check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
