About the Role
The Design Manager will play a critical leadership role across the full project lifecycle, taking ownership of the design management function from project inception through to delivery and completion.
Working closely with clients, consultants, and internal delivery teams, the successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring all design outcomes are commercially viable, technically robust, compliant, and aligned with programme and construction objectives.
This role requires a highly capable professional with strong leadership capability, exceptional stakeholder management skills, and proven experience coordinating multidisciplinary consultant teams while driving quality design outcomes within complex live project environments.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the design process across complex commercial construction projects from concept through to completion.
* Coordinate and manage multidisciplinary consultant teams to ensure efficient and seamless project delivery.
* Drive design outcomes that balance programme, cost, quality, functionality, compliance, and buildability.
* Review and manage project documentation to identify design gaps, coordination issues, and value engineering opportunities.
* Ensure all designs comply with Australian Standards, NCC/BCA requirements, authority approvals, and relevant legislation.
* Work collaboratively with site and delivery teams to ensure alignment between design intent and construction execution.
* Manage design programmes and proactively mitigate design-related risks throughout the project lifecycle.
Stakeholder Management
* Act as the primary point of contact for all project design matters.
* Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
* Partner closely with senior leadership teams to support successful project and business outcomes.
* Facilitate efficient communication and decision-making across all project stakeholders.
Commercial & Operational Excellence
* Contribute to project budgeting, cost planning, and financial performance initiatives.
* Identify opportunities for innovation, alternative construction methodologies, and design efficiencies.
* Drive continuous improvement across design management systems and project delivery processes.
* Support the implementation of best-practice design management frameworks and standards.
Leadership & Team Development
* Mentor and support Design Coordinators and broader project teams.
* Foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture focused on accountability and excellence.
* Contribute to team capability development, recruitment, onboarding, and performance management initiatives.
* Promote continuous learning, innovation, and professional development across the business.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
* Maintain high standards of quality assurance throughout all phases of project delivery.
