We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is ideal for an automation-focused senior technologist passionate about Linux, eager to build a career with Canonical, and to drive success with Ubuntu and open source products. If you have experience in IT operations automation, Infrastructure as Code, and a passion for technology, you will thrive at Canonical.
Job Summary
The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, which are used by over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops engineer, you will lead operations automation initiatives across private and public clouds, utilizing open source infrastructure as code software, CI/CD practices, and Canonical's automation products. You will also provide feedback to developers, submit bugs, and collaborate on design improvements to enhance scalability and reliability. You will be part of a global team of SREs supporting services for our company, customers, and the Ubuntu community.
Responsibilities
* Lead automation and Gitops initiatives as an embedded tech lead.
* Collaborate with IS architect to align solutions with architecture vision.
* Design and develop services as products for IS.
* Develop and improve infrastructure as code practices, increasing automation.
* Automate software operations for reusability and consistency across clouds.
* Maintain operational responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
* Enhance troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance monitoring skills using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch.
* Support and collaborate with global engineering and operations teams.
* Focus on larger projects and automation efforts during dedicated development time.
* Share expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work.
* Handle time-critical escalations responsibly.
Requirements
* Modern understanding of hosting architecture with infrastructure as code across clouds.
* Product mindset focused on developing products, not just solutions.
* Experience with Python in large projects.
* Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems.
* Proven ability to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure via code.
* Practical knowledge of Linux networking, routing, and firewalls.
* Familiarity with Linux storage solutions like Ceph and databases.
* Hands-on experience managing enterprise Linux servers.
* Extensive knowledge of cloud computing technologies.
* Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field.
* Effective communication skills in English (email, chat, video, in person).
* Motivated troubleshooting from kernel to web layers, collaborative when needed.
* Willingness to learn quickly and adapt to changing environments.
* Comfort working within distributed teams.
* Passion for open-source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
