About The College
Northumberland College is Ofsted Outstanding and is currently building a multi-million state‑of‑the‑art current campus in Ashington, expected to open in 2026. The college will feature a purpose‑built construction, housing, advanced manufacturing and engineering centre.
The curriculum covers technical, vocational, further and higher education, including apprenticeship provision and dedicated centres for young people with SEND.
The college has two main campuses in Ashington and Ponteland, with additional satellite delivery centres across the region.
The new campus will be located at Wansbeck Business Park, benefiting from direct rail links and road connectivity. The £52 million+ investment follows £14 million in recent upgrades at existing sites.
About The Candidate
The successful candidate will be based at the new Ashington campus where they will play a key role in empowering and uplifting students with special educational needs (SEND) at our campuses.
About The Role
As a Learning Mentor, you will collaborate closely with curriculum teams and student support services to develop personalised strategies that enable students with SEND to overcome obstacles and thrive within the College community. Your creativity and dedication will be essential to continuously improving our provision and achieving excellence.
Role Responsibilities
- Provide learning mentor support to students with learning difficulties or disabilities, including emotional and behavioural needs, on mainstream or discrete College courses.
- Assist in the implementation of detailed assessments and ongoing monitoring of support strategies.
- Devise and implement support strategies in partnership with senior departmental staff and other college professionals for individual students or groups.
- Identify potential problems early and communicate them to teaching staff, departmental managers, and refer to appropriate college services.
Qualifications
- GCSE Maths and English or equivalent.
- Learning Support/Care qualification (or equivalent) or significant experience in this field.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience supporting individuals with SEND or additional learning needs.
- Knowledge of Educational Health Care Plans and assessment and support plans.
- Awareness of responsibilities under SEND Code of Practice and the Equality Act.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
