GIS Analyst – Ecology / Environmental Consulting
A specialist ecological consultancy is looking for a casual GIS Analyst to support its ecology projects. This role is ideal for someone already working part‐time in a similar consultancy who wants an additional 1–3 days per week of meaningful, flexible work.
You'll join a small, experienced GIS team and work closely with expert scientists on projects such as native vegetation removal assessments, flora and fauna surveys, and wind/solar/land development impact studies.
* Employment type: Casual (hours vary with project demand)
* Typical workload will range from 2-5 days per week and be influenced by seasonal trends and the need to cover leave, etc.
What You'll Do
Most tasks are technically straightforward on the GIS side but require strong ecological literacy, including producing maps for ecology projects, for example:
* Survey footprint and study area maps
* Client‐ready PDFs for reports and advice
* Configure and maintain ArcGIS Online / Field Maps projects, including:
* Modifying existing field maps (not full new designs)
* Adding/removing layers and appending project‐specific data
* Preparing offline areas so field teams can collect data without coverage
* Support field teams (botanists, zoologists) by translating ecological instructions into GIS outputs (e.g. "exclude this patch", "add this habitat layer")
* Troubleshooting basic sync and data issues from the field
* Perform basic data management and analysis for ecological datasets:
* Incorporating survey returns into GIS
Essential experience required:
* Experience as a GIS Analyst within an ecology / environmental consultancy, for example:
* Solid ArcGIS experience, including:
* ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcMap
* ArcGIS Online and Field Maps (or very similar tools)
* Ecological literacy, including the ability to:
* Understand terms like native vegetation, flora & fauna survey, habitat, study area, impact footprint
* Comfortable producing multiple maps per day in a fast‐paced consulting environment
Nice to Have
* Prior work specifically on:
* Flora and fauna survey support
* Wind farm, solar farm, or land development impact assessments
* Experience preparing map outputs for government approvals or similar regulatory processes
