Office Manager & Financial Controller
SPE is a locally based Electrical Engineering and Contracting business that has been operating within the ACT for over 38 years.
We are seeking an experienced and highly organised Office Manager & Financial Controller to join our team. This is a key role within the business, combining office management, administration, bookkeeping, payroll, financial reporting, and financial control responsibilities.
This position would suit a proactive, detail-focused professional who is confident working independently.

About the Role
The Office Manager & Financial Controller will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the office while overseeing the company's finance functions. The role requires strong organisational skills, sound financial knowledge, excellent communication, and the ability to manage competing priorities across administration, finance, payroll, compliance, and business support.
Duties will include, but are not limited to:
Office Management & Administration
* Front office management, including reception, responding to intercom, and answering and directing phone calls
* Communicating effectively with clients, staff, suppliers, and management
* Managing office supplies, printing, filing, mail collection, and general office coordination
* Managing email correspondence and general business communications
* Providing administrative and clerical support to the Construction Team
* Providing administrative and clerical support to the Engineering Team
* Booking staff and management training, accommodation, and flights
* Assisting with staff onboarding, off-boarding, employee documents, and internal communications
* Coordinating staff functions and company events
* Setting up meeting rooms and arranging catering as required
* Assisting the senior management team when required
* Managing ad hoc administrative duties and office errands
Finance, Payroll & Financial Control
* Managing day-to-day bookkeeping and finance operations
* Processing journal entries, bank reconciliations, and maintaining the general ledger
* Managing accounts payable and accounts receivable
* Managing staff expenses, invoices, and supplier payments
* Processing payroll, superannuation, PAYG, and related payroll obligations
* Ensuring compliance with Australian tax obligations, including BAS, IAS, FBT, payroll tax, and superannuation
* Preparing BAS, IAS, and FBT lodgements
* Ensuring company records remain accurate, compliant, and up to date
* Preparing financial reports for monthly management meetings
* Assisting with annual budgets and monitoring performance against agreed targets
* Preparing rolling forecasts to support strategic and operational planning
* Providing financial insights, forecasting, and performance reporting to support business decision-making
* Developing and implementing financial strategies aligned with business objectives
* Implementing and improving financial processes, controls, and reporting practices
* Assisting in the creation and maintenance of a financial risk register
* Liaising with external accountants, auditors, and tax advisors as required
* Providing high-value business advisory support to management
Skills and Experience
The successful candidate will ideally have:
* Previous experience in a similar office management, finance, bookkeeping, accounting, or business administration role
* Strong working knowledge of Australian tax compliance and payroll
* Experience managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, and financial reporting
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
* Excellent organisational skills and strong attention to detail
* Excellent time management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
* Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
* Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
* Well-developed analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
Essential Qualifications
* A degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline
* CA or CPA qualification, or working towards CA/CPA, would be highly regarded
* 3–5+ years' experience in accounting, finance, bookkeeping, or a similar role
* Preferred Experience
* Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
* Proficiency with Xero
* Proficiency with Simpro
* Previous bookkeeping experience
* Experience with financial operations within a construction, electrical, engineering, or contracting business
* Experience improving finance systems, reporting processes, and internal controls
* You must be an Australian Citizen to be considered for this role.
