About the Role/Specialty
Fonts & Images Processing owns the services that process and deliver fonts & images to our users. This role builds high‐performance, low‐latency systems that enable a seamless experience when using fonts and images.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
* Lead a team of engineers developing and maintaining Java backend services and tools for fonts and images processing.
* Oversee the buildout of early C++ backend services in Canva.
* Work with lead engineers to design and implement scalable, high‐performance systems for processing large volumes of fonts and images content.
* Collaborate closely with group leadership, product, and design specialties to meet new product needs.
* Set clear goals for the team, balancing product needs against the long‐term health and cost of owned services.
* Work closely with many teams and groups across the company to balance requests against overall company priorities.
* Communicate and collaborate with front‐end, design, and other backend teams to integrate font and image‐related services with the broader Canva product.
* Coach engineers by providing regular, practical feedback and helping them reach their growth goals.
* Ensure code quality and maintainability through code reviews, testing, and adherence to best practices.
What We're Looking For (Qualifications)
* Strong coaching and interpersonal skills; able to engage and motivate a diverse team.
* Proven experience leading engineering teams, fostering collaboration, providing feedback, and enabling high performance.
* Experience building scalable, secure, efficient backend services, ideally using C++ or Java.
* Solid computer science fundamentals: concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, design patterns.
* Strong interpersonal skills for handling conflicts and difficult conversations.
* Proficiency with cloud platforms and services.
* Strong problem‐solving skills and ability to debug complex issues.
* Experience with large‐scale datastores such as AWS DynamoDB, S3, or equivalent.
