About the Role
Our client is the Commonwealth’s independent regulatory authority responsible for maintaining the integrity of the management of water resources in the Murray‑Darling Basin. We are seeking professionals at the senior associate level to be engaged as a legal secondee within their Legal Services Branch. The successful candidate will provide legal advice on a broad range of complex and sensitive matters, prepare and draft legal documentation, and proactively engage with key stakeholders as a trusted legal advisor.
An initial 3‑month labour hire contract is on offer, with prospects of further extension.
This role is full time (40 hours per week) and can be undertaken from multiple locations across Australia (flexible and remote working arrangements are supported).
Only Australian citizens with a minimum existing Baseline security clearance will be considered for this role.
Duties
- Provide legal advice on a broad range of issues including statutory interpretation, administrative law, regulatory actions, inquiries, investigations and corporate matters.
- Advise on legal risk and mitigation strategies on a broad range of complex and sensitive matters.
- Prepare, draft and review complex legal matters and documents.
- Develop legal guidance resources and deliver legal training to staff.
- Assist with the management of litigation across a broad range of matters including judicial review and regulatory enforcement.
- Assist with Freedom of Information requests and provide privacy advice.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, anticipating and responding to their needs and expectations as a trusted legal advisor.
- Provide feedback and settle advice for other lawyers within Legal Services Branch.
Requisite Skills / Experience
- Minimum 6 years’ PAE as a legal practitioner, including previous Commonwealth legal experience.
- Current practising certificate issued in your state or territory of residence.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of administrative law and constitutional law (highly desirable).
- Experience managing regulatory litigation or independent inquiries, either directly or through the management of a team (highly desirable).
