Overview
Lead cutting‐edge RF, microwave and mixed‐signal hardware development for the SKA project. Full-time appointment on a fixed term basis for 12 months. Base salary range: $134,288 – $142,099 p.a. plus 17% superannuation.
About The Area
The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) is a high‐profile WA State funded joint venture between Curtin University and The University of Western Australia. Established in 2009, ICRAR is one of the largest astronomy institutions in Australia and a leading national contributor to the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Project. The Astrophotonics Group at ICRAR specialises in the design, development and testing of advanced photonic systems used across radio astronomy, optical astronomy and space science. With core expertise in stabilised optical-frequency and microwave-frequency transfer, the group brings together world‐class researchers and engineers in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment.
About The Opportunity
* Take technical leadership in the design, simulation, optimisation and validation of RF, microwave and mixed-signal hardware for the SKA optical fibre‐based frequency distribution system.
* Work within a highly specialised Astrophotonics engineering team, collaborating across mechanical, embedded and systems engineering streams, and engaging with national and international project partners.
* Shape engineering standards, guide design reviews, mentor junior engineers, and contribute directly to production transfer, compliance testing and long‐term system reliability.
About You
* Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications, or closely related discipline (or equivalent demonstrated experience).
* Minimum 5–7 years practical experience in RF/microwave and mixed-signal product design, including hands‐on PCB layout for controlled‐impedance and high‐frequency designs, with extensive experience typically expected at a senior engineering level.
* Demonstrated proficiency with RF/microwave simulation tools (Microwave Office / ADS and/or HFSS / Microwave Studio) and circuit simulation (LTSpice or equivalent), including the ability to guide others in their use.
* Substantial Altium experience: schematic capture, PCB layout, stackup design, footprint creation and generating manufacturing deliverables, with demonstrated ability to review and approve the work of other engineers.
* Proven lab measurement skills with VNA, spectrum/network analysers, oscilloscopes and the ability to extract and interpret S-parameters, including experience leading complex measurement and validation activities.
