ROBERT WALTERS AUSTRALIA
Management Accountant
Posted: 11 February
Offer description

Overview

Not-for-profit organisation seeking a Management Accountant for an initial 6-month contract, with potential to transition into a permanent role. You will join a supportive finance team that values collaboration, knowledge sharing, and professional growth. The organisation is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where your expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, and process improvement will be highly valued. With flexible working arrangements available, you can enjoy a healthy work-life balance while contributing to the delivery of high-quality primary healthcare services across Australia's most isolated communities.

What you'll do

What you'll do:

As a Management Accountant within this impactful not-for-profit setting, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the organisation's financial health. Your daily activities will centre on preparing insightful management accounts for executive review while developing user-friendly dashboards that illuminate both organisational and program performance. You'll collaborate extensively with managers during the annual budget cycle — helping them craft defensible budgets — and provide ongoing support through rolling forecasts and scenario modelling. Asset management will be another key focus area; you'll maintain meticulous records of acquisitions and disposals while coordinating stocktakes to ensure accuracy. Your expertise will also be called upon to guide program teams through complex funding agreements — ensuring every dollar is allocated correctly and reported transparently. By enhancing financial models and systems, you'll drive improvements in accuracy and efficiency across the finance function. Ultimately, your efforts will underpin strong decision-making processes that enable the organisation to deliver vital healthcare services where they are needed most.

* Prepare monthly management accounts with detailed variance analysis and commentary tailored for executives and budget holders, ensuring clarity and actionable insights.
* Develop comprehensive dashboards and reporting tools that effectively track both organisational and program performance, enabling informed decision-making at all levels.
* Deliver meaningful financial insights and recommendations that support strategic planning as well as day-to-day operational decisions across multiple cost centres.
* Ensure all financial reporting aligns with not-for-profit governance standards and funding requirements, maintaining transparency and compliance throughout.
* Lead the annual budget process by collaborating closely with managers to develop realistic budgets that reflect organisational priorities and resource constraints.
* Prepare rolling forecasts and scenario modelling to support ongoing organisational planning, identifying risks early and proposing solutions for continuous improvement.
* Monitor budget performance regularly, providing timely reports that highlight variances, risks, and opportunities for efficiency gains.
* Maintain an accurate asset register by recording acquisitions, disposals, transfers, and impairments promptly with correct documentation in line with accounting standards.
* Coordinate regular asset stocktakes in partnership with managers to confirm asset location, condition, ownership restrictions, and resolve any discrepancies efficiently.
* Support program teams in managing funding agreements by tracking restricted/unrestricted funds, guiding cost attribution, project coding, and ensuring compliance with grant conditions.
What you bring

To excel as a Management Accountant in this unique environment, you will bring substantial experience from previous roles focused on management accounting or financial reporting - preferably within not-for-profit or multi-program settings. Your technical qualifications (CA/CPA or equivalent) will be complemented by hands-on expertise preparing detailed accounts, budgets and forecasts for senior stakeholders. You possess advanced analytical abilities that allow you to translate complex data into actionable insights for both finance professionals and non-specialists alike. Your proficiency with industry-standard accounting platforms (including Xero or MYOB Advanced) ensures seamless integration into existing systems while your mastery of Excel supports robust modelling activities. Communication is one of your strengths - you know how to present information clearly regardless of audience background - and your attention to detail means nothing slips through the cracks. You thrive under deadlines thanks to strong organisational skills while upholding confidentiality at every turn. If you have experience navigating grant acquittals or regulatory reporting requirements (such as those set by ACNC), plus a track record of improving processes through technology adoption or dashboard development (Power BI), you'll find yourself well-positioned for success here.

* Experience in management accounting or financial reporting roles within complex organisations.
* Relevant qualification in Accounting or Finance discipline; CA/CPA qualified or actively working towards professional accreditation is essential for success in this position.
* Proven ability to prepare management accounts, budgets, forecasts, and provide clear commentary for non-finance stakeholders.
* Advanced analytical skills with demonstrated capacity to interpret complex financial information into practical recommendations for diverse audiences.
* Experience supporting multiple cost centres or programs - ideally gained within not-for-profit or funding-based environments where compliance is paramount.
* High proficiency in accounting software packages (such as Xero, TechnologyOne or MYOB Advanced) as well as advanced Excel skills including financial modelling capabilities.
* Exceptional communication skills enabling you to explain financial concepts clearly to colleagues from varied backgrounds without jargon or ambiguity.
* Meticulous attention to detail combined with excellent time management abilities ensures deadlines are consistently met without compromising quality.
* Commitment to confidentiality, integrity and values-based work - demonstrating reliability in handling sensitive information responsibly at all times.
* Desirable: Experience in grant acquittals or government reporting; familiarity with ACNC compliance; exposure to BI dashboard development (e.g., Power BI); proven record of driving continuous improvement initiatives within finance functions.
