Experienced contract developer required to work part-time on two interactive museum kiosk projects currently in production. This role suits an independent developer who can work autonomously, collaborate closely with a creative producer, and deliver reliable outcomes for public-facing installations. Immediate start.
Project one is an interactive video-based experience built around 16 veteran stories. Estimated development effort is approximately 30 hours. An immediate start will be offered on this project.
Project two presents records of Australian soldiers, including photographs and captioned details, delivered from a searchable text-based database. Visitors will be able to search by surname, or browse records via an interactive kiosk interface. Estimated development effort is approximately 45 hours.
Both projects run on BrightSign media players. Development is undertaken using BrightAuthor on Windows 10/11, with additional logic and interface behaviour implemented using JavaScript and TypeScript. BrightAuthor is a visual development environment.
BrightSign players are widely used global platforms for running stable, purpose-built digital signage and interactive kiosks in museums, galleries, and public spaces. The developer will need to be comfortable learning BrightAuthor and working within this environment as part of the role.
Responsibilities include developing and refining interactive kiosk UI and applications using BrightAuthor, implementing custom logic and interface behaviour using JavaScript and TypeScript, building web-based application logic adapted for use in a controlled public environment, integrating and managing media-heavy content including video, interface states, and inactivity timeouts, testing and optimising applications for stability, usability, and unattended public use, collaborating with our team on interaction flow, behaviour, and reliability. User manuals are to be written for customer operation.
Required experience includes strong JavaScript skills with working knowledge of TypeScript, demonstrated experience building web-based applications, ability to adapt applications for reliable use in public or unattended environments, experience working with media-heavy applications including video and UI state management, and the ability to work independently and meet agreed delivery timelines. A good understanding of Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 or later is required. Ability to set up app settings screens for customer use is important.
Experience with touchscreen or kiosk-based interactive applications, attract loops, and prior experience with BrightSign or other public space interactive media platforms would be beneficial but are not essential. Windows PC required. Other equipment will be supplied for the projects.
The developer must be based in Brisbane or on the Sunshine Coast and must have access to a car to attend our Sunshine Coast office for a small number of in-person sessions. This is a contractor role with part-time hours across both projects. Further project work is likely upon successful completion of these two projects.
Applicants should provide a brief summary of qualifications, residential status for Australia, relevant experience, availability, examples of interactive multimedia work, and their expected hourly rate.
