About the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission (the Commission) was formed on 1 January 2019. We work to improve the lives of older people by maintaining the integrity of the aged care system.

As the single independent regulator of Australian Government aged care services, we offer a variety of interesting and challenging jobs across most capital cities.

It is an exciting time to join the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission, with major reforms underway to improve aged care in Australia. You will be contributing to our role as the national regulator to safeguard and protect older Australians receiving aged care services.

More information about the role, vision and people of the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission can be found on our website.

About the Team

Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS):

The Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS) is a national initiative designed to prevent, reduce, and respond to abuse and neglect of older Australians receiving Commonwealth-subsidised aged care. SIRS requires providers to manage incidents effectively and report serious incidents to the Commission across eight defined categories, including abuse, neglect, restrictive practices, unexplained absences and unexpected death.

About the Role

Within the Assessment and Early Remediation Branch, the Serious Incident Assessment (SIA) Section uses SIRS notifications and related intelligence to identify, assess, and respond to risk. The section:

* Assesses the actual and potential risk to consumer safety and wellbeing.
* Evaluates provider capability and takes proportionate, timely action where concerns are identified.
* Supports provider learning through feedback and sector-wide insights.
* Ensures accurate and high-quality recording of notifications to strengthen Commission-wide intelligence.

This work enables the Commission to detect emerging risks early, strengthen provider capability, and improve outcomes for older Australians.

Key Accountabilities include:

* Lead the delivery of the SIRS regulatory program, ensuring decision-making and operational outcomes align with performance indicators, legislation, intelligence, and policy frameworks.
* Manage and develop a high-performing operational team in a fast-paced environment, providing direction, coaching and support to build capability and ensure consistent regulatory practice.
* Drive quality assurance and continuous improvement, using data and insights to identify risks, trends and opportunities to strengthen regulatory outcomes.
* Cultivate productive relationships with providers, internal stakeholders and external partners to support coordinated responses and sector engagement.
* Model resilience, integrity and sound judgement, particularly when managing sensitive, complex or confronting information.
* Lead complex case coordination, including preparation of high-quality case reports and facilitating information-sharing across the Commission.
* Deliver organisational change initiatives, supporting the implementation of new processes, risk-mitigation strategies and capability-building activities.
* Ensure operational decisions are timely, proportionate and consistent, particularly where provider capability, consumer safety or imminent risk is a factor.

Key Capabilities

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

* Extensive experience leading dispersed or remote operational teams, particularly through periods of change, increased demand or evolving regulatory expectations.
* A proven track record of delivering results by building capability, driving accountability and removing barriers to performance.
* Demonstrated understanding of complex case coordination, or the ability to rapidly acquire this knowledge, including assessing risk, interpreting, synthesising and integrating information and making defensible regulatory decisions.
* Strong experience in implementing and measuring quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives, using data and stakeholder feedback to refine practice.
* Advanced analytical skills, with the ability to interpret legislation, operational intelligence and multifaceted information to form sound judgements.
* Highly effective communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience navigating sensitive, high-risk matters with professional resilience and in a trauma informed manner.
* Demonstrated ability to deliver outcomes in a complex, high-volume regulatory or compliance environment, while maintaining accuracy, timeliness and risk awareness
