Legal Services – Commercial
Darwin, Northern Territory
Ongoing vacancy available
An opportunity is available for a lawyer to join the Commercial Division, providing high-quality legal services to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies and statutory bodies. This role offers exposure to a wide range of complex and interesting commercial matters that directly support the work of Government and the broader community.
The Commercial Division provides strategic commercial legal advice from a whole-of-Government perspective. The team works across major infrastructure projects, land development and management, procurement and contracting, funding agreements, mining and resources, revenue law, compensation matters, native title, Aboriginal land rights and a broad range of general commercial issues. The work is varied, often high profile, and requires a practical and solutions-focused approach.
In this role, you will provide legal advice and representation on commercial and related matters, working under the supervision of senior lawyers and reporting to the Director of the Commercial Division. You will be responsible for preparing high-quality legal advice, contracts, court documentation, correspondence and briefings, and for managing matters from start to finish. You will work closely with government clients and external stakeholders, representing the Solicitor for the Northern Territory in a professional and considered manner.
The successful applicant will be admitted as an Australian legal practitioner and eligible to obtain a Northern Territory practising certificate. You will be able to manage your own legal practice, balancing autonomy with working collaboratively as part of a team. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate complex legal issues clearly, negotiate effectively and manage a significant and varied workload while meeting deadlines.
You will be comfortable working under pressure, take responsibility for the quality and presentation of your work, and demonstrate professionalism in all interactions. The ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds is essential. Experience working within the Northern Territory Government environment, or an understanding of Territory laws and processes, will be well regarded, as will experience using electronic file management and time recording systems.
This is an excellent opportunity to develop deep commercial law expertise while contributing to work that has a real impact on the Northern Territory.
