The Role: Crafting the Foundation of VFX
As a Mid-Level Modeller at Framestore, you are at the heart of the asset creation process. Your work dictates the success of downstream departments, including Texturing, Rigging, and Creature FX. You will be expected to produce models that are not only aesthetically stunning but also technically optimized for high-end cinematic performance.
* High-Fidelity Asset Creation: Build accurate CG models (hard-surface and organic) based on photographs, 3D scan data, blueprints, or conceptual artwork.
* Technical Optimization: Develop clean, efficient topology using polygonal subdivision techniques to ensure models deform correctly during animation.
* UV Mapping Excellence: Generate logical and consistent UV layouts, maintaining an awareness of UDIM workflows and texture resolution requirements.
* Pipeline Integration: Adhere strictly to studio naming conventions and folder structures to ensure seamless hand-offs to the Texture and LookDev departments.
* Collaborative Review: Present work-in-progress models to Leads and Supervisors during dailies, demonstrating a willingness to iterate based on creative direction and technical feedback.
* Project Management: Maintain open lines of communication with Production teams regarding progress, proactively flagging potential delays to ensure deadlines are met without compromising quality.
Requirements & Qualifications
We are looking for a Modeller who balances a strong "artistic eye" with the technical discipline required for a major film pipeline.
* Maya Proficiency: Deep working knowledge of Autodesk Maya for professional-grade 3D modeling.
* Subdivision Mastery: Exceptional skills in polygonal subdivision modeling, ensuring models are both high-detail and production-ready.
* Spatial Awareness: Strong sense of form, scale, and volume, with the ability to interpret 2D concepts into 3D space accurately.
* UV Strategy: A high level of efficiency in UV layout, with a clear understanding of how UVs impact the texture painting process in software like Mari or Substance Painter
* Team Synergy: Strong interpersonal and communication skills; you must be able to work harmoniously within a large, diverse team of artists.
* Organization: A meticulous approach to organizing your own workflow and managing multiple tasks simultaneously.
Preferred "Bonus" Skills
* Digital Sculpting: Proficiency in ZBrush or Mudbox for high-frequency detail and organic forms.
* Anatomical Knowledge: A strong grasp of human and animal anatomy to aid in the creation of realistic creatures and characters.
* Conceptual Ability: The creative flair to assist in sculpting designs where reference may be limited.
